Transform Your Smile with Invisalign in Tyler, TX

October 25th, 2024

Invisalign

When you don’t have a straight smile, it can easily impact your self-confidence. So many people dream of straighter smiles, but they simply don’t want to hassle with normal braces. That’s where Invisalign can be a valuable tool to help you get the smile you want.

Smith Dental Care is a Tyler, TX, Invisalign professional that can help you consider the process and determine if it’s a good choice for your needs. Consider a clear, discreet method to transform your smile. We can help!

Why Choose Invisalign?

Invisalign has a lot of great benefits. It has quickly become a popular alternative to traditional braces because it is discreet and often has much shorter treatment timelines. Invisalign and other common brands use custom-made, clear aligners that fit to your teeth. The aligners help to gradually move your teeth into the desired position.

Invisalign provides patients with the benefits of an aligned smile without the drawbacks that metal braces might have for some people. While they may not cover complex teeth movement, they can serve a variety of needs.

These are some of the most common reasons people choose Invisalign solutions:

  • Virtually Invisible: these clear aligners are barely visible. Most people will not realize you are wearing them, making Invisalign a great option for when you want to improve your smile but don’t want to attract extra attention to your mouth while doing so.
  • Comfortable Fit: aligners are custom-fitted to your teeth. Metal braces often cause irritation or discomfort. You may experience some mild adjustment to each aligner tray, but overall, they fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth.
  • Removable Convenience: Invisalign is removable at your convenience. They simply slide off and on your teeth to be removed when necessary. You can remove them to eat, drink, brush, and more. You will need to be sure to wear them for the recommended time, but you can also take short breaks from them.
  • Fewer Visits: typically, you can enjoy fewer visits to the dentist throughout the treatment with Invisalign. New sets of aligners will be provided for you as your adjustment occurs, and you can usually enjoy a flexible treatment plan.

How It Works

Invisalign uses a series of clear aligning trays that are removable. Each tray is custom-designed to fit your teeth where they are at that stage in the transformation. Your provider will begin with a consultation where they do a full assessment, talk about your goals, and take digital impressions to start creating your treatment plan.

The 3D model and digital impressions taken will help to map the anticipated movement of your teeth over the treatment period. You will swap to a new aligner as your dentist advises. This will continue until your teeth have moved as planned and you’ve completed the treatment process.

Our process works like this:

  1. Schedule an initial consultation to meet with us and discuss
  2. Wait for aligners to be designed and created for a unique treatment plan
  3. Wear your aligners as the dentist recommends, swapping them at appropriate intervals
  4. Enjoy the transformation every step of the way

We will work closely with you throughout treatment to ensure everything is progressing as it should. It is your responsibility to wear the aligners as recommended and take proper care of the aligners and your oral health.

The Benefits of Using Invisalign

Invisalign is typically used for teens and adults who want to use a discreet method to shift their teeth. They may not work for every orthodontic need, which is why it is so important to work with a qualified provider.

These are the things that Invisalign can typically treat effectively:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked or misaligned teeth

Invisalign vs Traditional Braces

What is the difference in this method compared to traditional braces? The most obvious difference is the physical appearance. Traditional braces use metal brackets that are placed on each tooth and then the work is done by a metal wire laid over the brackets and connected with rubber bands that can be clear or colorful. Invisalign is clear and practically invisible.

There are some differences in diet as well. There are some very strict restrictions for traditional braces to avoid hurting your teeth or dislodging a bracket. Invisalign aligners are removed while eating, eliminating many of these restrictions. The same goes for cleaning: Invisalign is removed to be cleaned, while you have to carefully clean around brackets of traditional braces.

How to Find the Best East Texas Dentist for Your Family

October 18th, 2024

east Texas dentist

Taking care of your family’s health is one of the most important things you will ever do - and that includes their oral health. Finding the right East Texas dentist isn’t as easy as it might sound. In fact, it can be challenging to find a dentist and an office that you really like.

How do you make a decision without having to test out every single dentist in the area? Check out these tips to help you make an informed decision and find the right fit.

Assess Expertise and Experience

We often assume that because it is a dentist office they have expertise, but the truth is they don’t all have the same expertise. We’re not referring to brand-new offices here. Every dental provider has to start somewhere. However, we are referring to making sure they truly are licensed and certified to do the dental work you need.

In addition, even a brand-new dental provider should have spent time learning or interning under an experienced provider. Consider the experience and expertise that they bring to the table. Don’t be afraid to try out a new office, but do your due diligence about their experience, training, specializations, etc.

Look for Family-Friendly Environments

Every office is going to have its own aesthetics and setup. If you’re taking the whole family to the dentist, you want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. If you walk into a silent office that makes you feel awkward bringing in the kids, this likely isn’t the right fit for you.

The whole family should be comfortable, so take the time to find a welcoming, warm, family-friendly atmosphere to put everyone at ease. Take a look at the aesthetics. Are things clean, comfortable, relaxing, and inviting? Is there anything for the children while they wait? How do the staff engage and interact with your family? All of these details matter.

You Can Learn a Lot from Online Reviews and Testimonials

There are some things you simply can’t learn from a website. A few of these things will only be clear when you actually visit the office. However, you can often get a feel for real-life experiences and feedback by reading online reviews and testimonials.

Remember that not everyone will be pleased every single time. Instead, look for overall positive feedback and testimonials or reviews that speak to things you are concerned about or looking for. Look for discussion about customer service, wait times, atmosphere, and pain management.

Consider Services Offered and Services Needed

We don’t all need the exact same things when it comes to dental care. In fact, we all have very unique needs, and even within your household the needs could vary significantly. Look for an office that provides a wide range of services and will be able to handle the diverse needs of your family.

Here are some basics to cover:

  • Preventative Care: regular cleanings and exams, fluoride treatments, x-rays
  • Restorative Care: crowns, root canals, fillings, dentures, etc.
  • Orthodontics: braces, Invisalign, and orthodontic specialties

You might also consider cosmetic care, sedation dentistry, and other needs that suit your family.

Technology and Techniques Do Matter

A dentist’s office that is willing to invest in technology to have the best possible solutions and techniques is absolutely crucial. Modern practices use state-of-the-art technology to ensure their patients get the best care and comfort, no matter their needs. You can ask questions about their equipment and techniques, or just look around to see if things feel outdated or up-to-date.

Some common modern technologies and techniques include the following:

  • Sedation solutions
  • Digital Impressions
  • Digital x-rays

These are just a few examples. If the office is using the best technology, you’re going to be able to tell.

Financial Details

Quality dental care isn’t cheap, so it’s important to understand the financial details before you commit. Check to find out if your insurance plan is accepted by the office you are considering. You will want to be aware of the coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses so you can plan accordingly.

Some dental offices provide payment plan options to give you some flexibility to work with your budget. These are more common for extensive procedures like a crown, root canal, or braces. You might even be able to find discount programs for family packages, but this will vary from office to office.

The Importance of Dental Crowns in Oral Health

Dental crowns are not just something to make your smile better. While they certainly can contribute to an improved smile, they also help to maintain and enhance your overall oral health when needed. Dental crowns address several key aspects of dental care, and understanding their significance is important to making an informed decision.

Benefits of Crowns for Long-Term Dental Health

Dental crowns will contribute to your long-term health goals and needs. These crowns provide protection and reinforcement to a tooth, or teeth, that might otherwise be weak or deteriorating. Teeth that are severely damaged by decay, trauma, or even wear are far more vulnerable to additional deterioration. Once a tooth begins to deteriorate, it is typically downhill from there.

Crowns work to provide a protective barrier for the vulnerable tooth. It’s an encasement that wraps around the tooth in question, protecting it from any further harm. This encasement will shield the tooth, preventing any additional damage from happening. It can help to prevent fracturing or breaking, among other things.

You will find that crowns can significantly extend the lifespan of a tooth, reducing the need to remove that tooth. Covering and reinforcing the tooth structure helps to maintain integrity and functionality of the tooth that is already there, helping prevent more invasive procedures from being required.

When a crown is made with high-quality materials, it will be long-lasting and hold up just fine for everyday use and needs.

Restoring Functionality and Aesthetics

Crowns are used to protect the tooth that may need some extra care, but they also look nice. A damaged or compromised tooth could make someone feel self-conscious about their teeth or less likely to smile. But everyone should smile as much as possible, and a crown on the damaged tooth just might improve that.

Crowns restore functionality so that a damaged tooth doesn’t deter you from chewing and using that tooth. It provides additional strength and reinforcement so you can use it like you normally would. The crown will also improve the appearance of your smile, covering up teeth that are discolored, misshapen, or uneven. It covers up those imperfections, helping to create a natural-looking and visually appealing smile.

In addition to these elements, a crown might help maintain proper bite alignment. By replacing missing or damaged teeth, the adjacent teeth are less likely to shift into the gaps, helping prevent misalignment and other similar dental problems.

Understanding Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps or coverings that are placed over a damaged tooth to restore the natural elements of the tooth. This includes the following restorative details:

  • Size
  • Shape
  • Strength
  • Appearance
  • Use

Crowns are always custom-made to your own teeth and are designed to blend in with your natural teeth. When properly cared for, a crown will last for many years before needing to be replaced or requiring an alternative method. There are different materials and types of crowns, which could affect the appearance, durability, or functionality.

There are certain advantages and disadvantages to each of the different types of crowns. These are the most common materials that are used for dental crowns:

  • Porcelain
  • Metal
  • Porcelain Fused to Metal
  • Resin

Learn more about each of these below.

Porcelain

Porcelain crowns are well-known because they have a very natural appearance. The crown is made with a high-quality ceramic material that will even have the translucent appearance that natural teeth have in color. It’s an excellent choice for front teeth or highly visible teeth for this reason.

The primary advantage of porcelain crowns is their very clear aesthetic appeal. They blend seamlessly with your other teeth. If you’re looking for the right aesthetic, this is your best solution. On the downside, the porcelain material is not as durable as some of the alternative materials available. They may be more likely to chip or wear down over time, especially with heavy pressure.

Metal

Metal crowns are a common choice because they tend to be the most affordable. If you have a tooth that is not highly visible, this is a go-to solution. Metal crowns can be made from various metals, including gold, palladium, and other metal alloys. They are incredibly durable, which is another reason they are a great choice.

The metal crown has exceptional strength and is highly resistant to wear. They are used most commonly for molars and other back teeth, as these teeth are not highly visible and usually have the hardest work in significant chewing requirements.

The primary advantage of a metal crown is the longevity, affordability, and the strength of the materials that are used. The downside is that these crowns will generally be the same color as the metal that is used for them, meaning they aren’t going to blend with your natural tooth color. They are practical, reliable, and affordable. This makes metal a good option for teeth that don’t affect your smile aesthetics as much.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

Porcelain fused to metal, also called PFM, crowns combine the hearty benefits of metal with the aesthetic benefits of porcelain. The exterior of the crown is porcelain, providing that appealing white and translucent look that people typically prefer.

Underneath the porcelain layer is a metal base that gives the patient all of the durability they could possibly desire. The porcelain is fused over the metal base, allowing you to experience the best of both worlds. This has quickly become one of the most common choices for that exact reason.

Thanks to the metal base, you can experience strength and resilience. And thanks to the porcelain coating over the metal, you also get to rest assured that the crown blends in naturally with your other teeth. PFM can be used for front or back teeth thanks to these details. The advantage is experiencing the benefits of both porcelain and metal in one.

The downside is that the porcelain overlay or fusing doesn’t always cover every last millimeter of metal. Some PFM crowns still show a dark or metal line right at the gum line.

Resin

Resin crowns are made using composite materials. The composites can vary, but they are typically chosen for the ability to fabricate the tooth as desired and the affordability of materials. If you’re looking for an economical solution to get you by for a while, this can be a good choice. It should be known that resin crowns are considered to be temporary in most cases and not a long-lasting option like the other materials.

Resin crowns can be made quickly and affordably. They do have a natural appearance, but they won’t have the same durability as porcelain crowns. Resin tends to be more apt to staining and will not be able to handle long-term pressure or chewing needs. However, they do make a great temporary solution while you plan for the next type of crown to be more permanent for your needs.

Indicators for Dental Crowns

There are several common reasons why a dental crown may be necessary. Here are the most common reasons:

  • Restore damaged teeth
  • Post-root canal treatment
  • Cosmetic improvement
  • Supporting dental bridges
  • Protecting weakened teeth

Let’s explore each of these further below.

Restore Damaged Teeth

Dental crowns are commonly used to restore teeth that are damaged, whether that damage is from decay or trauma. In some cases, they are even used for severe cavities that need to be addressed. When a tooth has extensive decay or a fracture, the remaining tooth structure is not always enough to support a filling or other basic restorative options.

A crown will provide a protective covering over the damaged tooth, effectively shielding it from any further damage or decay. It’s a restorative measure that will provide a repair for the tooth while also preserving its functionality and strength in the process. Crowns allow you to continue eating normally and speaking normally without the typical side effects or discomfort of a damaged tooth.

Post-Root Canal Treatment

Following a root canal, the tooth that underwent the procedure is typically very weak. It may also be more susceptible to additional damage. During a root canal, the pulp of the tooth is removed, which leaves the remaining tooth hollow. Adding a crown will protect the remains of the tooth, but it will also restore the tooth’s functionality. It is very common to place a crown over the treated tooth.

The crown will provide a robust shield to the tooth, reinforcing the weakened structure and preventing further problems like cracking or breaking. You can chew normally and use that tooth as though nothing ever happened with the reinforcement of the crown.

Cosmetic Improvement

Cosmetic improvements can apply to a wide variety of needs. Whether you’re concerned about teeth discoloration or you have irregularities or other damage to your visible teeth, crowns can provide ideal solutions. A dental crown can be placed to enhance the appearance of teeth that have cosmetic defects. Things like discoloration, misshapen, or uneven teeth can be corrected with crowns.

Supporting Dental Bridges

Dental bridges create replacements for multiple teeth and provide a bridge between teeth. Crowns can play a major part in supporting dental bridges to provide anchorage for the bridges replacing missing teeth. The crown will act as an anchor for the bridge, helping ensure it is attached to a stable structure so it can last much longer.

This approach is all about stability for that bridge. Even if the tooth near the bridge is not damaged, heaving that extra stability of an anchor can provide substantial support for the bridge.

Protecting Weakened Teeth

Finally, crowns can be used to provide support to weakened teeth. When a tooth has had a large filling or experienced excessive wear and tear from something like teeth grinding, it becomes weak. A crown is used as a protective barrier of reinforcement in these cases. It helps to prevent any further damage, providing additional strength to the weakened tooth.

Teeth can be weakened for many reasons. Things like wear, cracks, fillings, and more will weaken a tooth. That weakness makes the tooth more susceptible to breaking or fracturing, but a crown can help protect it against these issues and other severe dental problems.

Dental Crown Procedures

There is a certain process to receiving a dental crown. It will be important to closely work with your provider to ensure you get the best results. Most of the time, placing a crown requires two separate visits because of the steps involved.

Here’s how the process typically works.

  1. Consultation and Exam: during an initial consultation, the dentist can perform a full exam to determine whether a crown is the best option and discuss your options with you. X-rays and some sort of impression will be taken in preparation for the crown placement.
  2. Tooth Preparation: the tooth receiving a crown will need to be prepared to make sure there is room for crown placement. The dentist may need to remove a portion of the tooth for a proper fit. Typically, the dentist relies on impressions to help custom-make the crown.
  3. Temporary Crown Placement: while waiting for the permanent crown, a temporary crown might be placed to help protect the tooth in the meantime. This temporary crown will be removed when the permanent one is placed.
  4. Fitting and Placing Permanent Crown: when the permanent crown is ready, the dentist will double check the fit and color to be sure it works as planned. Then, the dentist will place it as a permanent fixture.
  5. Final Adjustments and Patient Instruction: the dentist will closely inspect the crown and make any necessary adjustments for it to fit and function properly and comfortably. They will also provide you with any necessary instructions for caring for the crown.

Every step of the process is important to ensure that the crown will fit properly and function properly. A provider who has experience working with crowns will advise you of the process every step of the way.

If a provider determines that a crown may be necessary during a general cleaning or another procedure, the consultation typically takes place at that time rather than in a separate appointment.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

crowns

Dental crowns can provide a wide variety of benefits to patients who are considering them. These benefits support appearance and aesthetic goals, but they can also significantly support your oral health in multiple ways.

These are the primary benefits:

  • Durability and Longevity: crowns are designed to last so they can provide a long-term solution for your oral health needs. They are strong and reliable, offering protection for many years without needing replacement or repair.
  • Improved Aesthetics: crowns are going to improve or enhance the look of your teeth. They cover up imperfections and can be color matched to your teeth to ensure you have a perfect and pleasing smile.
  • Restored Functionality: crowns will allow you to continue to use your teeth as they are intended to be used. They take an otherwise weak tooth and reinforce it to restore the full function of your teeth. With crowns, you can speak, chew, and smile as normal.
  • Enhanced Oral Health: crowns will protect the tooth in question, which will help prevent further issues related to that tooth. They are typically used to support or protect weakened teeth, which can help reduce the likelihood of far worse problems.

Potential Risks and Complications

As with any procedure, there are potential risks and complications you should be aware of. Knowing and understanding these can help you make a fully informed decision. We recommend speaking to your provider about any concerns and questions you may have as well.

Dental crowns are considered generally safe, but let’s take a look at the potential risks.

  • Sensitivity or Discomfort: sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures is normal after receiving a crown. In most cases, this will subside naturally as your mouth becomes accustomed to the foreign crown object. This sensitivity is usually to hot or cold temperatures, but may include soreness from the procedure.
  • Crown Loosening or Falling Off: over time, it is possible for a crown to become loose or even fall off. This typically happens because the cement setting the crown wears away or breaks down. This is usually rare, but if it does happen, you should reach out to your dentist right away.
  • Allergic Reactions: allergic reactions are not common and can usually be avoided if known allergies are disclosed. However, there are times a patient may experience a reaction to the metal that is used in certain crowns. If you do experience or suspect a reaction, contact your dentist immediately.
  • Gum Irritation or Recession: if for some reason the crown does not quite fit right, this may cause some irritation to your gums. It can also lead to gum recession because of the pressure it causes. This can lead to discomfort or potential infection, so be sure to contact your dentist if you are experiencing irritation.

Care and Maintenance of Dental Crowns

Proper care for your dental crown is very important. If it is not properly cared for, it may lead to irritation, reactions, or even failure of the crown. The good news is that proper care is fairly simple. These things will make a difference.

  • Brush and floss daily, following recommended daily oral hygiene and care
  • Have regular dental check-ups as recommended, which is usually every six months
  • Avoid habits that can lead to damage, such as chomping ice or hard candy, using your teeth as a tool, or other actions that are not recommended
  • Address issues early - if you experience discomfort or notice anything that doesn’t seem right, contact the dentist right away

Being aware and proactive will be an important part of proper maintenance. Follow your provider’s instructions and don’t ignore it if you suspect an issue.

Cost and Insurance Considerations

It is important to know that a crown can cost money out of pocket. On average, crowns can cost anywhere from $1000-$2,500. The total cost might depend on the tooth for placement, as well as the selected crown materials. Your provider will be able to give you a more accurate estimate for your crown needs.

If you have dental insurance, it will likely cover a portion of this expense, but insurance varies significantly. Your provider can check with your insurance to see what they cover. They may offer payment plans or financing options if you cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs upfront.

Everything You Need to Know About Pill Sedation in Tyler, TX

October 4th, 2024

pill sedation Tyler

Sedation has become one of the most valuable tools in modern medicine, especially in the dentist’s office. Many people suffer from dental phobias and dental anxiety. Whether it’s from a bad experience or simply not always knowing what to expect, this often makes it challenging for people to receive the dental care they need for prime oral health.

Thankfully, sedation has become more acceptable to help potential patients overcome their fear and anxiety as they seek treatment. There are many different types of sedation. In this guide, we are going to focus on pill sedation in Tyler, TX. Below, you will find everything you need to know, including how it works, who might benefit from it, and what to expect. Keep reading to learn more.

What is Pill Sedation?

Pill sedation is an oral medication that is prescribed by a qualified dentist. The medication will be taken as instructed by your dentist. Generally speaking, you will take the pill before coming to the office to give it time to start to work. The pill will induce a state of relaxation and mild drowsiness that should help you maintain calm throughout your entire appointment or procedure.

The pill sedative used can vary, but some common options include diazepam and triazolam. These are known for helping to calm nerves, reduce anxiety, and promote comfort. The pill calms the patient without completely putting them to sleep, although it may make them feel sleepy.

Another name for pill sedation is oral sedation or oral conscious sedation. These terms are used because, under pill sedation, the patient will be deeply relaxed but also awake and aware.

How Does It Work?

If you have ever taken any kind of oral sedation or pill, this will work similarly to those. When you take over-the-counter medicines at home, they usually start to provide relief in approximately 30-60 minutes. This pill will work in the same general way, but it is a prescription rather than an over-the-counter option.

After you take the sedative, the medication in it is absorbed into your digestive system and enters your bloodstream. It will begin to take effect in approximately 30 minutes, and you will start to feel calm and relaxed. Many pills cause you to experience drowsiness, which contributes to the calm feeling.

It is recommended that you do not drive when you use pill sedation since it can make you drowsy.

Check Out the Benefits

There are benefits to using a pill sedation method as opposed to alternative options. What works for you may vary depending on your needs. These are the top benefits of oral sedative options:

  • Non-invasive approach
  • Helps to relieve anxiety
  • Convenient method
  • Minimal recovery time

Who Should Consider Pill Sedation?

Not everyone will be a good candidate for oral sedation. However, there are many who may choose this method. It is important to understand that these pills can affect everyone differently and may not work as well for some as they do for others.

Pill solutions are typically chosen for people who have a fear of needles or feel claustrophobic with a mask on their face. If you have low pain tolerance or just need to feel relaxed, it can also be a strong choice. This method is easy and non-invasive, if that is what you are looking for.

What to Expect

Before you use this method, your dentist will provide you with clear instructions on how to prepare and when you should take the medicine. Here are some tips:

  • No eating or drinking for a few hours before your appointment and no caffeine within 12 hours of your appointment
  • Take the sedative at the recommended time (usually 30-60 minutes prior to appointment)
  • Arrange transportation to and from the office; do not drive yourself
  • Wear comfortable clothing and bring anything that helps you feel more at ease

The pill will lead to you feeling deeply relaxed and probably drowsy. Your dental team will monitor your vital signs for your safety. You will remain conscious, although you may fall asleep naturally. You will likely have limited memory of your appointment because of the sedative. The pill will wear off naturally on its own, but you may feel groggy for a few hours.

The best way to recover from the procedure is to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water, and allow yourself to rest. Avoid taking or using anything that could interact with the sedative.

Final Thoughts

Using pill sedation is a decision that should be made based on your needs. It is important to be aware of your options and how this solution could affect you. There are benefits to oral methods, as well as other options. Be sure to speak to your dental provider about your options to choose the right approach.

At Smith Dental Care, we know that every patient has unique needs. Let us help you with any sedation dentistry questions and work with you closely along the way. Schedule your appointment today.

Revolutionizing Smiles: How Digital Impressions with iTero Scanner Transform Dental Care

September 27th, 2024

digital impressions

Precision is one of the most important elements in dentistry. Precision allows dental providers to ensure their patients get the best possible care. Tools like the iTero scanner have made a significant impact on revolutionizing smiles. Advanced technology like this creates digital impressions, giving us the ability to move away from those uncomfortable and messy molds and move into the future with much better results.

Dentists looking for the best solutions have moved to technology like this. The goal is to improve and enhance patient care, and the iTero system helps to make that happen. Learn all that there is to know about digital impressions vs traditional dental molds. Keep reading to learn more!

What is an iTero Scanner?

iTero embraces the future of technology, giving dental offices the ability to reinvent their patient care and treatment solutions. The brand offers several different products, but one of the most noteworthy is the digital scanner that provides 3D images. The intention of those images is to completely replace the manual molds of old that were bulky, messy, and uncomfortable.

Since the 3D scan is directly of the patient’s mouth, it captures very specific and accurate images with 3D technology. The images will capture the teeth and gums and can do so in a matter of minutes. The iTero will scan the inside of the mouth using a wand device. That scan then creates a detailed digital model that can be viewed by office personnel in real time.

The iTero scanner is most popular for orthodontic treatments, restorative procedures, and cosmetic dentistry. However, it can be used for any type of dental treatment that might normally require a mold to provide accurate treatment.

These digital scans are surprisingly easy to work with and incredibly accurate. Plus, they are digital, which means no physical elements have to be sent off or captured through photos.

Say Goodbye to Messy Molds

Traditional molds have always been captured by putting a cumbersome tray filled with gooey materials into the client’s mouth. The materials ooze out and form around the teeth, creating an impression of your teeth. However, any wrong movement or mis-bite can lead to incorrect details in those impressions.

Many patients who have experienced those trays for manual molds have known the feeling of stretching cheeks, serious discomfort, or even gagging from the bulky piece in their mouth. With iTero, all of this can be avoided. It’s as simple as a small scanning wand gently gliding over the teeth. The results are accurate digital impressions without the mess and without the extreme discomfort.

Precise and Better Results

The reality of old mold processes is that they were not always very accurate. There were a lot of details that could easily cause a provider to get a bad mold. When that happened, anything that was based on the mold could be inaccurate as well. Those molds affect your treatments, and any incorrect detail could negatively impact the treatment received.

With high-definition digital images from the iTero, dental offices get digital impressions that are extremely precise. The wand scans every little detail. As long as the providers know how to properly scan, the results are far more accurate than manual impressions. This allows dentists to devise restoration needs or create tailored treatments that are perfectly designed for every detail of the teeth in question.

This helps reduce the possibility of errors or adjustments that have to be made and streamlines the process as well.

A Faster Path to Treatment

When it comes to dental care, playing the waiting game isn’t always possible. With traditional molds, they had to be sent off and then any necessary treatment equipment was created according to those molds. The process was long and could require multiple appointments to even get started. If there were any errors with the impressions, that dragged the process out even more.

Since iTero scanners provide instant digital impressions, the process is much faster for everyone. The provider can get to your treatment far more quickly, speeding up the entire process to get you taken care of.

Eco-Friendly Dental Care

Sustainability and reducing waste are becoming more and more important. A transition to digital impressions makes practices far more eco-friendly in their approach. There is less waste and fewer disposable materials that are used when digital impressions are utilized rather than physical models.

Final Thoughts

The truth is that dental impressions and dental care are quickly turning to digital solutions in many different ways. Digital impressions vs traditional dental molds offer substantial benefits for all. Why Safe Sedation Dentistry is a Game-Changer for Anxious Patients

September 23rd, 2024

safe sedation dentistry

If the thought of going to the dentist makes you anxious or downright afraid, safe sedation dentistry is an absolute game-changer. This type of solution helps to keep someone calm and feeling more relaxed so that they can show up at the appointment and take on whatever is needed at the dentist’s office. Whether your nervous reactions come from a past experience, the unknowns of pain or treatment, or even unexplained reasons, these solutions are incredibly helpful in making dental care accessible for everyone.

Sedation dentistry offers a transformative approach to dental care. Learn more below.

Enjoy a Calmer, More Relaxed Experience

When someone has a phobia or anxiety, they feel what seems like an out-of-control fear when it comes to facing that situation. In this scenario, it’s going to the dentist. That irrational fear or anxiety often takes over, and it will cause the person to be stressed or even uncooperative at the dentist.

With safe sedation solutions, sedatives can be carefully and strategically administered to help relieve some of those worries and make the patient feel more at ease. The basic goal of sedation is for the patient to be calm and more relaxed throughout their procedure. There are several different levels of sedation depending on the needs of the patient in question.

The dentist will work with the patient to determine the best solution. The patient will be able to undergo treatments or procedures without being burdened by overwhelming fear and anxiety.

Pain-Free Approach

When someone is afraid or anxious, their pain receptors are triggered more easily. They might feel phantom pain because they are so worried about the pain. The unknown potential for pain is one of the top reasons people experience dental anxiety.

There are also patients who simply have a naturally low pain threshold. Some may just have sensitive mouths that make them more susceptible to pain at the dentist office. Sedation is not a painkiller, but it can calm the mind and reduce or remove those fears of pain so that what does occur is less formidable. It will help to make the local anesthetics more effective.

Typically, people who use sedation solutions have a pain-free experience during their procedure or treatment. At the very least, they will notice less pain because they won’t be so hyper-focused on it.

Overcoming Sensitivity and Gag Reflexes

Have you ever been so anxious about something that you were extra sensitive to that topic? What about being so afraid that you start to feel sick? You might even gag. This is a common effect of dental anxiety. In addition, many people have strong gag reflexes and the lightest work in their mouths triggers it.

Now, imagine being the dentist who is trying to take care of you, but you keep gagging or reacting from your anxiety. Safe sedation helps to reduce these issues. If you are highly sensitive to dental work or have a strong gag reflex, these solutions can help to suppress the issue. The benefit of that is you making it through the appointment much more easily, but also allowing the dentist to get done what they need while keeping you comfortable.

Ability to Undergo Lengthy Procedures

At times, patients will need more extensive dental work or care. Sometimes it’s the thought of being stuck in a dentist’s chair for extended periods that could cause anxiety. Sedation can help to keep a patient calm throughout even lengthy and complex processes.

Something like getting a deep cleaning can take an extended length of time. Of course, there are also more extensive procedures. If the patient can be at ease and calm, the provider is more likely to be able to get more work done in a single visit, rather than having to force the patient to undergo multiple appointments to accomplish one thing.

Build Confidence for Future Dental Care

If you take advantage of sedation solutions, you might find yourself experiencing less anxiety over time. As your brain starts to recognize that those visits aren’t as bad as they used to be, it becomes much easier to go through future appointments.

With consistency and the support of sedation, you may experience more comfort and reduced anxiety for your future dental needs.

Customized Treatment Options

Finally, sedation is customized to meet your needs. Different procedures and different people will have various levels of need. The dentist can tailor your sedation and treatment to what works for your specific needs. It takes a personalized approach to ensure your dental needs are taken care of, and you receive the appropriate level of care and comfort in the process.

Dentures Near Me Made Easy at Your Local Tyler Dentist

September 17th, 2024

dentures near me

Our smiles are one of our best assets. When that smile has imperfections, it can often make a person self-conscious or unsure. The good news is that there are plenty of great ways to restore your smile, and dentures are one of them. When you have tooth loss or another issue that calls for extensive smile restoration, dentures are an effective way to repair the issue, and they’re a longstanding solution as well.

If you’re looking for “dentures near me” in Tyler, finding a local dentist to handle the process is essential. You want an office that will be sensitive, caring, helpful, and affordable. We’ve got you covered at Smith Dental Care.

Why Consider Dentures?

Not everyone needs dentures. They are more popular with aging adults, but they also have a place with other people who experience tooth loss for whatever reason. Tooth loss can impact our lives in many ways.

Without our teeth, we could struggle to eat, speak, or smile with confidence. Dentures are designed to provide a practical solution, replacing multiple teeth with a simple insert that fits your mouth by design.

There are some great benefits to using dentures. Take a look:

  • Improve appearance or smile
  • Enhance comfort for oral needs
  • Improve speech
  • Increase self-confidence

From everyday needs such as eating to being able to smile without feeling unsure about how you look, dentures can help restore a mouth that has tooth issues. A qualified dental office will know exactly how to ensure you get the right dentures to meet your needs.

A Look at the Denture Process

Most dental offices that offer dentures consider this a general treatment. As long as they have the appropriate equipment and training, they can help provide dentures for anyone who needs them. People of all ages can need or use dentures, but there is a certain process to getting them fitted and constructed to meet your needs.

Let’s look at the process in more detail.

1. Consultation

Every denture patient will start with a consultation. This is a great opportunity to get to know your dental provider and ensure you will be comfortable with them throughout the process. The dentist will examine your oral health and discuss what you want to accomplish as well.

They can help determine whether dentures are the best solution or whether an alternative may be a better choice for your needs. Typically, the consultation also includes taking any scans needed, such as x-rays and 3D imaging. This helps to provide the clearest possible picture to fully understand your dental structure. It will be important when it’s time to create the dentures.

2. Denture Building and Formation

Most dentist offices will send off impressions and scans to a company that will build your dentures to perfectly fit your mouth. Some offices do their own building, but it depends. There may be a waiting period for those dentures, but the office will communicate this with you and coordinate so you know exactly what to expect.

Be patient while the dentures are created and formed. Remember that you want them to be a perfect fit.

3. Fitting

When the custom dentures are ready, your dentist will bring you to the office for a fitting. In this step, you will try on the dentures and the dentist will thoroughly examine them to see if any adjustments need to be made. The goal is for the dentures to be a perfect fit.

The dentist may make some minor adjustments. Typically, there shouldn’t be any major adjustments needed. However, there are times when they are needed, but your dentist will walk you through this if it is necessary.

Final Adjustments and Follow-Up

As you wear your dentures, there may be some additional adjustments needed. If you have any concerns, questions, or issues, it is essential to discuss these with your dental provider so they can address them.

As your mouth gets used to the dentures, you will know if any discomfort or fitting issues are present, and your dentist can help make additional adjustments. You will likely also have some follow-up visits and checkups so your dentist can ensure your dentures are in top condition and your oral health is properly maintained.

Choose a Local Dentist for “Dentures Near Me”

It’s best to choose a local dentist that you trust to handle your denture experience. It’s so much more convenient because they are local to you, making it much easier to take care of appointments or get adjustments when they are needed.

Your local dentist will provide personalized care and support that meets your needs. They are there to work with you for ongoing support to ensure you have a positive denture experience and that your dentures last longer and work as they should.

How Young Dentists are Innovating Dental Care

September 10th, 2024

young dentists

The dental industry is quickly changing. There are always new things to learn and new technologies that can help provide dental patients with the best possible care. The transformation is absolutely remarkable as we see fresh ideas, cutting-edge technology, and an atmosphere that is more customer-centric than ever before.

With young dentists rising up in the profession, the change and focus toward innovation are quite clear. The goal is to make dental visits far more comfortable, as well as ensuring services are more accessible for everyone. Here, we will take a closer look at how dentists are working to reshape the industry, embrace innovation, and affect change in the future of dental care.

Advanced Technology is Embraced

There was a time when new technology was feared. Many offices put off investing in new technology because they were comfortable with the old. There is nothing wrong with being comfortable, but being willing to learn and embrace new options and new ideas often provides better services for the client and improves the efficiency of the dental office in the process.

Embracing advanced technology doesn’t mean providers have to upgrade their equipment every few months or even every year. But it does mean being open to new technology and upgrading where it makes sense. We’ve seen positive changes to digital x-rays as well as the introduction of 3D imaging, laser dentistry solutions, teledentistry, and more.

These tools help providers leverage their services to enhance accuracy, provide precision treatment, and increase patient comfort as well.

Here’s a closer look:

  • Digital X-rays & 3D Imaging: x-rays are certainly not new, but digital x-rays and 3D images are a game-changer to provide clearer images and reduce radiation exposure as well. These allow the providers to get more details and better views inside the patients’ mouth, leading to more effective and precise treatments.
  • Laser Dentistry: lasers offer precision and can be used for various dental procedures to help reduce pain, minimize bleeding, and even speed up recovery time.
  • Teledentistry: this innovative technology is obviously limited as many dental issues need in-person treatment or procedures. However, telehealth solutions allow patients to have consultations and other basic services without having to be seen in the office, and it’s a hugely convenient option.

A Focus on Preventative Care

With innovation and advancement comes a shifted focus on practicing elements to help focus on preventative care instead of reactive care. There will still always be a need for reactive care in some cases, but preventative care can help reduce this.

Regular checkups and proper oral hygiene play a huge role in this. With offices focusing on early detection and patient education, it helps to reduce the need of immediate care and instead allows patients to catch issues early and maintain their oral health more proactively.

Enhancing Patient Experiences

You will find that young dentists are actively looking for ways to better support their patients. Many dentist offices are transforming from clinical environments that can be daunting to someone with dental anxiety to a more peaceful and calm environment using ambient lighting and quiet music. Obviously, there are certain sanitation measures they will meet in exam areas, but the overall atmosphere has a soothing vibe.

Offices that focus on the patient experience use patient-centric communication, prioritize overall comfort, and incorporate modern design elements that are welcoming and relaxing.

Expanding Access to Care

Finally, many young providers are revamping how care is provided in an effort to make dental care more accessible to more people. This takes on many different forms. In some offices, it might be offering mobile dentist solutions or providing a certain day that is focused on low-income care to provide for every budget range.

Many providers are getting involved with community outreach, offering their expertise where it is needed most and participating in dental health fairs or workshops. Then there are offices that use innovation to provide better care for their patients. We already mentioned the atmosphere and environment, but there are also solutions like sedation dentistry and Invisalign treatments that help cater to a wider range of people.

Embracing innovation is often just about recognizing that the world is changing, and so are the needs of dental patients. Offices that make an effort to adapt to these needs and demands are making a statement and standing out in the industry.

Everything You Need to Know for a Perfect Smile with Invisalign and Other Clear Aligners

September 3rd, 2024

invisalign

We all want that perfect smile, right? It’s a goal that many people have. There are many different types of orthodontic treatments. While the majority of people tend to use traditional methods such as braces, it’s nice to know there are modern solutions. Invisalign, and other clear aligners, are a great way to get the perfect smile and transform your teeth. These clear aligners are discreet and easy to use.

In this guide, we will explore Invisalign and other similar options. Here, you can find the pros and cons, what to expect, and other helpful factors to help you determine whether they are the right choice for your needs. Smith Dental Care is an Invisalign provider and a certified provider of clear aligner solutions. Work with them to get your questions answered and explore your options today.

Understanding the Value of Orthodontic Treatments

Using orthodontic solutions isn’t always just about achieving a beautiful smile. While it certainly does help with this, it also can play a significant role in improving or supporting your oral health. When teeth are properly aligned, they are much easier to take care of. This can help reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues as well.

In addition, aligned teeth could improve your chewing efficiency and help prevent or reduce jaw issues related to misalignment. The boost in self-confidence is certainly a winning factor in a straight smile, but there are many other benefits to be aware of as well.

Invisalign solutions are tailored to your personalized needs for teeth alignment. They’re an effective way to get a customized plan for your perfect smile.

All About Invisalign

You probably have heard the name “Invisalign.” While this is technically a specific brand of clear aligners, many people use it as a category. There are other brands as well. These are clear aligners that are custom designed for your teeth. You wear them throughout the day, removing them to eat. The aligners come in phases as your teeth begin to move.

The goal of aligners is very similar to that of braces. They are designed to help straighten your teeth gradually. The first aligners were developed in the late 1990s, and they have evolved significantly since that time. They are known for offering a discreet solution that provides an alternative to traditional metal braces. Aligners are custom made to each patient, as well as each stage of their correction process.

The Invisalign brand was introduced in 1997. It has become one of the leading names in the clear aligner industry. Again, you will find there are many brands. You will also find that many people refer to all clear aligners as Invisalign, but this is a common misconception of the name details.

When Invisalign and other clear aligners were introduced to the market, they represented a significant shift in the orthodontic industry, providing an alternative that many felt was more aesthetic, particularly adults who didn’t want to wear traditional braces.

These aligners apply controlled force to your teeth. As you progress through the stages, your teeth will gradually move into the desired positioning toward your goals. You will work through a series of aligners, with each one having slight adjustments from the prior trays. The aligners are made of medical-grade plastic materials that are nearly invisible when worn.

If you’ve ever wondered why someone would use clear aligners, it’s typically because they prefer the discreet appearance. Let’s take a quick look at the difference between aligners and braces for treatment.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

When it comes to choosing the right solution for your needs, it is important to research all of your options and then weigh your goals against the solutions available. Invisalign and clear aligners can achieve many of the same things that braces can. However, you should know that braces are typically better for more complex needs, as they do offer some additional capability.

Both methods are effective for teeth straightening purposes, and both offer pros and cons. These are where you might find the most differences:

  • Cost
  • Maintenance and care
  • Treatment duration
  • Comfort
  • Visual aesthetics

The costs can vary significantly between the two. Ultimately, your costs are going to depend on a lot of factors, such as your needs or the types of materials you use. Invisalign costs typically range anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000, while braces average around $2,000 to $7,000. Again, this can depend on several factors.

Braces stay on your teeth, so you have to work around them when brushing or flossing. Some people find this difficult, but there are tools out there to help. Clear aligners come out so you can brush and floss your teeth and then clean the aligners based on their instructions. You will find that you have more dietary restrictions with braces, as they can be sensitive to certain foods. With clear aligners, you remove them to eat so there aren’t as many restrictions.

Treatment duration will depend on your needs. However, the treatment timeline with clear aligners is usually faster than with traditional braces. If you wear the aligners as recommended, your treatment will likely be complete within 12-18 months. Braces typically take anywhere from 18-24 months to complete.

Comfort is going to depend on your preferences and sensitivities. Many people feel clear aligners are more comfortable because of the way they fit. They are less likely to cause irritation or discomfort against your gums, lips, and cheeks. However, you may still experience some discomfort from the snug fit of the aligners on your teeth.

Finally, the visual aesthetics are perhaps one of the biggest differences. Those who choose clear aligners often prefer the invisible appearance that is much more discreet. Braces are more obvious and noticeable, although there is nothing wrong with the visibility. Again, this really depends on your personal preferences in terms of visibility and appearance.

The Best Benefits of Invisalign Solutions

invisalign

There are many great benefits to using Invisalign solutions. Here, we will cover the best-known benefits of using clear aligners.

Aesthetic Advantages

One of the top reasons people choose to use clear aligners is the aesthetic advantage. Some people simply do not like the visible or bulky appearance of braces. Clear aligners provide people who are concerned with visibility with an option that is nearly invisible.

These offer a discreet solution, particularly for adults who prefer the invisible look. These are made with clear plastic materials, yet they are sturdy enough to get the job done for your straightening goals. The discreet and invisible appearance is highly sought after, allowing treatment to take place without the whole world knowing about it. It’s a great choice for adults or professionals who may feel self-conscious about wearing visible braces that are more obvious during treatment.

Comfort and Convenience

Another great benefit is that clear aligners tend to be more comfortable and far more convenient. When you wear traditional braces, there are a lot of restrictions on what you can or cannot eat and drink. You have to worry about tearing off brackets or hurting your teeth. You also have to be mindful of staining and other issues.

Clear aligners are much more comfortable on your teeth, and you have fewer restrictions. You simply remove them when you are eating or when you’re drinking something that could stain, like coffee. Clear aligners fit onto your teeth, almost like a glove. They are formed to your teeth so they are not bulky, poky, or anything else. They are not likely to have wires poking your cheek or parts of the materials that rub on your gums and lips, either. This greatly reduces the possibility of the irritation or discomfort that is often associated with traditional braces.

You may experience some minor discomfort with your clear aligners, particularly when you switch to a new tray. As your mouth adjusts, this discomfort will ease.

Removable as Needed

One of the best things about clear aligners is the ability to remove them when and where you need to. Most of the time, they come with a small case that you can store them in when removed.

You can remove the aligners when you need to brush and floss. There are also very specific protocols for how to properly clean your aligners. You can (and should) remove your aligners when you are eating. These are typically the only times it is recommended to remove your aligners, but you have the ability to remove them if you have another reason that comes up.

Just keep in mind that for the best results, you need to be sure to wear them at least 22 hours per day. Removal should be limited to as needed.

Shorter Treatment Times

The average treatment time for Invisalign customers is about 12-18 months. This can change a little bit depending on your needs and how your teeth progress along the way. You get great results in a faster timeframe than you would with traditional braces.

In addition, you typically don’t have to visit the orthodontist quite as often for clear aligners, although you will get updated aligners on a regular basis throughout treatment. Many advancements through the years have led to people being able to get quicker results using aligners.

Who Should Consider Using Invisalign?

invisalign

Invisalign and clear aligners are not perfect for everyone. Those who seek or need orthodontic treatment have unique needs. There are some things braces may be able to do that clear aligners may not be able to.

Aligners are designed specifically for straightening purposes. They can be used for many different age groups. They are perhaps most popular with adults, but there is some popularity with teenagers as well. The most popular age is adults in the professional industry.

Clear aligners are typically recommended for treating mild to moderate orthodontic needs, such as these:

  • Crowding
  • Spacing
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite

Whether you’re a teenager who is self-conscious about the idea of braces or you’re an adult who simply never was able to get braces before, they can be a great choice!

When Invisalign May Not Be a Good Fit

While clear aligners are typically great for most needs, there are times when they may not be the practical solution. It’s very important to work with a professional provider who has experience working with Invisalign and other clear aligners to know the best solution for your needs.

Invisalign is not a top choice for someone who needs significant movement or perhaps has severe orthodontic issues. They may not be a strong enough solution for significant needs, which is why consulting with a certified provider is so important.

The Invisalign Process

The process of Invisalign will be tailored to your specific needs. Your journey will start with a consultation at Smith Dental Care. Here, you and the provider can get to know each other, discuss any questions you may have, and determine whether clear aligners are a good solution for you.

The process will look a little something like this:

  1. Consultation process and assessment
  2. Digital scans
  3. Treatment plan and timeline
  4. Deliver aligners
  5. Monitoring progress

Let’s look at these steps in a little more detail.

1. Consultation Process and Assessment

A consultation is essential to understand the treatment process and ensure you and the provider are on the same page. The certified provider will assess your teeth and your needs with a thorough examination. They will explain what you can expect as well. This is a good time to ask any questions you may have.

2. Digital Scans

There was a time when molds would be used for preparation, but thanks to technology, 3D digital scanning technology gives the provider all the detail they need. These scans will generally be completed at your initial assessment. They will be used to create and fit your custom aligners.

3. Treatment Plan and Timeline

When digital scans are complete and your provider has analyzed your straightening needs, a treatment plan is created just for you. This plan will outline the expected movement of your teeth throughout the process. It also will provide a general guideline for the estimated duration of treatment. Treatment plans and timelines are specific to the needs of the patient. Your aligners will follow a series of aligners designed to progressively move your teeth into the desired position.

4. Deliver Aligners

When scans are complete and a treatment plan is created, these details will be sent to an Invisalign or alternative clear aligner producer. They will use the scans and treatment to create custom aligners. Those aligners will be delivered to you with specific instructions for the sequence of trays and when to progress to the next set. Follow all provided instructions for wear and care to ensure you get the results you are looking for.

5. Monitoring Progress

As you progress through your treatment plan, you will need to have regular checkups with the dentist. This allows them to ensure that you are progressing as you should be. They can also make any necessary adjustments to keep you on track with your treatment plan. While regular check-ins are required, you will find that they go relatively quickly and they are not required quite as often as braces appointments typically are. This offers some convenience.

Living with Invisalign

invisalign

When you start wearing aligners, there will be an adjustment period. Your mouth may be sore for the first few days as it adjusts. Speaking may take a couple of days as well, since you have something foreign in your mouth. Stay hydrated and stick it out, because the results are well worth it!

Side effects are rare and discomfort is typically mild and temporary. You can use over-the-counter pain relief as needed, but if you experience persistent pain be sure to speak to your dentist. Make sure you practice good oral hygiene habits during your treatments. Brush and floss twice per day, and clean your aligners following the instructions provided.

Common Questions About Invisalign

  • How long does treatment take? Invisalign treatment averages 12-18 months.
  • What if I lose or damage my aligners? Speak to your dentist as quickly as possible and they can advise you on what to do in this scenario.
  • Can I still play sports or a musical instrument? Yes, you can. You can remove your aligners as needed for these purposes. However, you should also consider wearing them during these times and adjusting to them if able to do so.
  • Will aligners affect my speech? You may notice a difference in your speech when you first start wearing aligners. This typically only lasts a few days as your mouth gets used to wearing the aligners and adjusts.
  • What do I do for special occasions or social events? Invisalign and other aligners are clear, making them nearly invisible. They likely won’t be noticeable by others at special occasions or events. However, you can remove them for short periods for these events. Just keep in mind that you need to wear your aligners at least 22 hours per day.

Preparing for the Cost of Aligners

The costs for aligners can vary depending on the brand that is used, the treatment needed, and several other factors as well. Your provider will be able to give you a detailed estimate of costs to expect. On average, aligners cost anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000, with most treatments falling somewhere in the middle.

Your costs will depend on your unique circumstances, but this average could help set your expectations for planning purposes. The costs are very similar to braces, although they can be more expensive in some cases.

Some dental insurance plans provide coverage for Invisalign and other orthodontic treatments. This is going to be specific to your insurance. You can plan ahead by checking out your insurance to see if they cover treatment and how much they will cover. You may need to be prepared for out-of-pocket expenses. There are also some dental plans that provide little to no orthodontics coverage, which is why it is so important to check your insurance details for clear expectations.

Some dental offices provide financing solutions or payment plans due to the high costs for orthodontic treatments. Check with your dental office to see what is available.

Choosing a Great Invisalign Provider

Having a great experience really depends on working with a provider who is qualified and great at what they do. Whether you choose Invisalign or another clear aligner brand, work with a provider who is certified and trained to work with clear aligners.

Check for providers who have appropriate experience and qualifications. When you have your consultation, you can ask questions about their experience, their processes, whether they have a portfolio, and get to know everything you need to put your mind at ease.

Maintaining a Smile Post-Invisalign

When you finish your Invisalign treatment, the job isn’t done. You’re going to need to follow all tips and recommendations from your provider in order to maintain your stunning new smile. Most people have to wear a retainer. You may also get a permanent retainer to hold your teeth in place. Your provider will instruct you.

Just be sure to follow all instructions and get follow-ups as recommended for monitoring purposes.

The Benefits of Sleep Dentistry for a Comfortable Experience

August 23rd, 2024

sleep dentistry

When going to the dentist causes you fear or anxiety, know that there are solutions out there to help you feel more comfortable during any procedure. Choose a dentist who provides sleep dentistry and other sedation methods that can put your mind at ease, helping you relax and be stress-free throughout your appointment.

There are various sedation methods available, including sleep sedation, that put you in the maximum amount of relaxation, ensuring you have a positive and painless experience for your dental needs. Learn more below!

What Exactly is Sleep Dentistry?

“Sleep dentistry” is another term for sedation dentistry. The term “sleep” is used because most sedation methods will immensely relax you, and some might even make you fall asleep during your appointment. These methods are not like general anesthesia, which actually medicates you to fall asleep. Instead, the intention is deep relaxation, but you remain awake (unless you naturally fall asleep) while being calm and relaxed.

There are different levels of sedation that range from minimal to deep sedation. Your available options might depend on your needs or the type of procedure being completed.

What are the Benefits?

There are plenty of benefits to methods like these. The truth is they can help you as well as your dental provider. When you are anxious and stressed, it makes it hard for you to acquiesce to the dentist. It makes it challenging for them to get things done as well.

Nobody wants to sit in the dental chair in fear and anxiety the entire time. Your provider also doesn’t want to torment you or force you to feel that way.

These are some great benefits:

  • Reduce anxiety and fear with calming effects
  • Allow management of pain and discomfort for a better experience
  • Keep the patient calm for more effective and efficient treatment
  • Improve quality of care and overall patient experience
  • Enhance patient comfort every moment of appointment
  • A more positive dental experience for someone who feels anxious or scared

Who Benefits from this Option?

The provider, the patient, and anyone supporting the patient will all benefit from using sleep dentistry. Not every dental patient needs it, but when they do it’s nice to have it available from experienced and trained professionals who can help choose the right method for your needs.

These are some common times sleep options are used:

  • Dental phobia or anxiety
  • Low pain tolerance
  • Sensitive teeth and gums
  • Lengthy or complex procedures
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Special needs patients or medical conditions

These options are generally safe as long as they are administered by a trained and experienced professional who knows how to do so properly. The dentist typically starts with a consultation to best understand the patient's needs.

Sleep Dentistry

The solution of sleep dentistry provides comfortable, painless solutions for a wide variety of patients and needs. Whether it’s to reduce discomfort or to soothe anxiety, these solutions help many dental patients get the care they need and deserve. Check into these options rather than avoiding the dentist altogether.

3 Ways to Find the Best Orthodontist in Tyler, TX

August 15th, 2024

best orthodontist Tyler TX

When it’s time for orthodontic services, you want to make sure you’re using a great provider who is knowledgeable, reliable, and can help you get the best results possible. There are many details that go into these types of services, but providing them does require specialty training and certification. If you’re looking for the best orthodontist in Tyler, TX, check out these tips to help you find one!

1. Get Recommendations and Check Reviews

One of the best things you can do is basic research. If you know anyone who has used a local provider, ask them about their experience. Who do they recommend - or perhaps not recommend? This is a great way to get real-life feedback from people who you know have had their own experiences.

Ask your friends, family, and colleagues for their recommendations. Word of mouth is often the best type of referral for these providers.

On top of asking people you know for feedback, you can also look up reviews to get a more comprehensive idea of an orthodontist’s office. Explore online reviews from sources like Google and Yelp. Pay close attention to details, and explore any negative feedback and whether it has been addressed. Consider details like quality of care, customer service, and the atmosphere of the office.

2. Credentials and Experience Checks

Most dental offices that offer orthodontic services are highly qualified and have the proper certifications and credentials to do so. However, it never hurts to double check. This should give you some peace of mind and added reassurance.

For orthodontic services, the American Board of Orthodontics, or ABO, is an appropriate credential. There are some others as well, but this is the most common. What you want to see specifically is board certification, which indicates specialized training in orthodontics. Those with board certifications have gone through training and passed an exam, demonstrating their expertise in the area.

You can also check out just what kind of experience the providers have. How long have they been in orthodontics? Do they have the options that you seek, and do they have verified experience in that area? Experience really does matter. While every orthodontist has to start somewhere, knowing the office has collective experience can be a huge factor.

Some orthodontics also have specialties with certain types of treatment options. Depending on your needs, you might want to check with this and determine the experience with treatments that will be similar to yours.

3. Evaluate the Office Itself

Finally, evaluate the office. You are not going to walk in for a consultation and get braces the same day. Typically, you will start with a consultation. This gives you the chance to get to know the office and the providers. It’s a great chance to investigate further.

While you are there, you can consider the atmosphere. Is it calm and relaxed or chaotic and stressful? Is the staff friendly or standoffish? Is the office well-maintained and clean? All of these details matter. You might even check out the technology to determine whether they invest in their practice and their clients.

Unlocking Your Best Smile: A Comprehensive Guide to Sedation Dentistry

August 9th, 2024

sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry has become increasingly common as the world recognizes how many people deal with dental phobias and anxiety. Sedation methods are incredibly useful for both the patient and the provider to help alleviate some of that anxiety and discomfort for the purpose of dental care.

In this comprehensive guide about sedation dentistry, learn everything there is to know, from the procedures that we use to what patients can expect from sedation and so much more. At Smith Dental Care, we provide a variety of sedation dentistry solutions tailored to best meet your needs. Let us help you find the best solution for your dental care.

About Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help a patient be calm and relaxed while they are in the dentist’s office. There are several different levels and types of sedation, which we will dig deeper into as we progress with this guide. The patient and dental provider work together to determine the best sedation based on the treatment that is needed, as well as the level of fear or anxiety that is present.

Most sedation methods are designed to provide relaxation throughout a dental procedure. The deeper sedation might even make you fall asleep or feel sleepy. Understanding the various types and levels of sedation is valuable if you need sedation or you know someone who does. There is a lot to be aware of to make an informed choice about your dental care and your sedation options.

Not every dental office will offer sedation, so it is also important to determine that with your dental provider or consider checking into experienced providers when sedation is needed.

A Little Bit About Sedation Dentistry History

Sedation methods have been around for a long time. They aren’t new. However, more offices have begun using a variety of methods because of how important it is to keep patients calm and relaxed in the dental office. NCBI research reveals that about 36% of people in the US have dental anxiety. That’s a pretty hefty percentage, which is why it is essential for providers to take measures for their patients.

Sedation methods have evolved through the years. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, was one of the first methods used, and it’s still a popular choice. However, science and technology have also brought us advancements through the years, and this has led to developing additional sedation techniques and even improving the use of laughing gas for sedation.

All of these details ensure that patients can get the care they need without overwhelming anxiety or fear during the process. Sedation also has led to safer and more effective treatments because of the calming presence it provides.

Modern Developments and Technology

Photo by Caroline LM on Unsplash

Technology is continually advancing, which is pretty awesome. Thanks to continued advancements, offices like ours have access to advanced technology and advanced techniques to ensure patients can be both safe and comfortable throughout any type of procedure, including routine cleaning appointments.

Innovation doesn’t always change the medicine aspect, but it does provide technology that gives us advanced monitoring and precise dosages. We have new techniques and new equipment that make using sedation far more precise and more comfortable as well. Perhaps one of the top innovations is digital monitoring systems that allow us to keep a close eye on any sedation method and constantly monitor the patient using sedation as well.

These systems make details more reliable and more accessible for everyone involved. The improvements in modern technology allow providers to handle more complex needs and procedures, providing patients with minimal discomfort or anxiety in the process.

Common Questions or Concerns About Sedation

We will look deeper at risks and concerns of sedation later, but let’s take a quick look at the most common issues. It’s not unusual to have some concerns or questions. Choose a dental provider who will take the time to answer your questions or go over your concerns. You are entitled to know everything before you decide to use sedation methods as a patient.

These are some of the most common things we hear:

  • Is it safe?
  • Will I be unconscious?
  • How long will the effects last?
  • How do I know it will really work?

Asking questions helps you learn about the methods and what to expect. It also helps us better understand any specific areas of concern so we can put you at ease. Understanding the details of sedation can help alleviate anxiety and build a trusting relationship between patient and provider.

Generally speaking, sedation methods are considered safe when they are administered by qualified professionals and tailored correctly to meet the needs of the patient. At Smith Dental Care, we have extensive experience and knowledge working with sedation and a variety of patients who use these services for their oral healthcare.

Types of Sedation Dentistry Solutions

There are several different types of sedation available. At Smith Dental Care, we offer these sedation solutions:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Oral Sedation
  • IV Sedation

Each type is used based on the procedure as well as the patient’s needs at the time. This range of sedation options ensures patients can be comfortable and relaxed according to their unique needs.

Nitrous Oxide

Photo by Caroline LM on Unsplash

Nitrous oxide remains the most common sedation option for the majority of situations. This method is also known as laughing gas. The name ‘laughing gas’ came from the fact that using nitrous oxide often presents a feeling of happiness and euphoria. It allows the patient to feel calm and happy, and it sometimes makes them slightly goofy or loopy as well.

Nitrous oxide is considered to be mild. The patient will have a small mask placed over their nose. The gas feeds through this mask, and as the patient inhales through their nose, they start to feel the calming effects. Patients will be conscious and responsive, but they will feel calm and relaxed at the same time.

This method is considered safe and effective, with very few risks or side effects. In most cases, the gas is also combined with oxygen when inhaled. It’s safe and effective for that calming presence that a patient needs to soothe any fear or anxiety they might be feeling.

One of the top advantages of this method is that the effects wear off almost immediately when the mask is removed. Patients can drive themselves following the use of nitrous oxide and will return to feeling normal within a few minutes. It’s not overwhelming, and there are typically no lasting side effects that come with the use of this method.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation may be a good option for someone who needs to calm down enough to even bring themselves to the dentist’s office. It’s considered a moderate sedation level. This type of medicine is prescribed and taken at a certain time prior to coming to a dental appointment. The oral medication helps the patient feel relaxed and at ease.

With oral medication, the patient typically stays awake and conscious. However, a patient might experience tiredness or drowsiness as a result of the medication. The medications used are solutions like diazepam or triazolam, but there are additional options available as well. Most instructions tell the patient to take the pill an hour before the appointment time.

With oral medication, the effects can vary. Every patient responds differently to medication, which makes it hard to predict exactly how it will affect each individual. The effects range anywhere from mild drowsiness to moderate sedation. The dosage needs may also vary. The challenge of oral medication is getting it just right for each patient.

It is very common for patients to feel groggy after using oral sedatives. It’s recommended that someone else drive you to and from the appointment as a precaution for this.

IV Sedation

Finally, we also use IV sedation, which is a deep level of sedation. This is administered through an intravenous connection, or IV. The medication will flow through the IV and directly into your bloodstream. Most offices will not use IV sedation for routine procedures because it provides a much deeper level of sedation. The method is more commonly used for lengthy or complex procedures.

This method requires a trained professional who can insert the IV and then carefully monitor the sedation and effects of that IV. When IV sedation is used, the patient is carefully monitored the entire time they are connected to the IV. The professionals will monitor the patient’s vital signs regularly and keep a close eye on any possible reactions that could happen as well.

The medication used in the IV may vary, but midazolam and propofol are common choices. The IV allows the provider and professionals to carefully control the level of sedation as well as the administration of the medicine. This will ensure patient safety and comfort throughout their procedure.

Using IV sedation may cause drowsiness as an after-effect. It also may lead to having no memory of the procedure or very little memory, which is often good. Because this is a deep sedation, the person who is sedated will not be allowed to drive home and will need to arrange for transportation. It may take some time to recover from the effects of deep sedation.

Levels of Sedation

In the above descriptions, we mentioned various levels of sedation:

  • Mild
  • Moderate
  • Deep

Each method of sedation has a different level of sedation that accompanies it. The method used often depends on the level of sedation that is needed for the patient and the procedure.

Mild sedation allows patients to relax and be fully awake. They can interact and respond to instructions, but they are calm and at ease. Moderate sedation is slightly heavier. The patient remains conscious and awake, but may be less aware. They might slur their words or be drowsy and not interactive. Deep sedation brings patients to the edge of consciousness and many tend to fall asleep. They will not be interactive or responsive in most cases, but they can be woken up if needed. Most patients do not remember the procedure under deep sedation.

The Benefits of Using Sedation Dentistry

Photo by Lesly Juarez on Unsplash

Sedation is typically optional, although there may be times when it is highly recommended for more complex or challenging procedures. The practice of sedation dentistry offers benefits to the dental providers as well as the patient.

Imagine having overwhelming anxiety about a dental visit. If you’re anxious and jumpy or even uncooperative, this makes it challenging for the provider to do what they need to do. A great provider will remain calm and work to soothe you, but it will take far longer to accomplish things and they may have to split it up into multiple appointments to get your work completed.

These are the primary benefits of using sedation solutions:

  • Alleviation of dental phobias or anxiety
  • Enhancing patient comfort during procedures
  • Ability to accomplish goals in fewer visits
  • Improve cooperation and satisfaction

We’re going to look at these in more detail below.

Alleviation of Dental Phobias or Anxiety

Dental anxiety and dental phobia are often barriers that mean a person either can’t or won’t bring themselves to get dental care. And yet dental care is so important, not just for your oral health, but for other health matters too. Poor oral health has been shown to contribute to additional health issues, both systemic and miscellaneous. Here are a few examples:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Respiratory infections
  • Diabetic issues
  • Heart disease
  • Bone loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood clots

These are just a few examples.

Dental care is necessary, which means finding ways to alleviate or overcome dental phobia and anxiety is absolutely crucial for your health. Sedation dentistry provides some of that alleviation and allows a patient to get what they need done while remaining calm and comfortable during the process.

Enhancing Patient Comfort During Procedures

When a patient does make their way to a dental office, the procedures themselves are sometimes what lead to fear or anxiety. There is a lot unknown as to whether there will be pain or discomfort. In addition, there is just something unsettling about people working in your mouth and the noises of the various tools that may be needed.

More often than not, these are the things that cause anxiety. Sometimes it stems from a prior bad experience. When a patient has to undergo any type of procedure that makes them uncomfortable, sedation can help to soothe and calm them throughout the procedure. The patient can relax and be more comfortable while the treatment is completed.

A patient should feel comfort instead of spending an hour, or however long it takes, fighting fear, anxiety, and stress because of whatever procedure they are going through.

Ability to Accomplish Goals in Fewer Visits

There are some procedures that take multiple visits; however, most treatment options are meant to be completed in a single visit. Sometimes a provider can even take care of multiple needs in one visit.

However, they are often limited to a short window of time to complete what is needed. If they aren’t able to get through things because they are spending extra time calming the patient or seeking cooperation, it means they won’t get through what they need to in that visit. This leads to additional appointments and not completing the desired work.

Using sedation dentistry makes it easier for the provider to accomplish what they need to in a timely manner. It also makes it easier for the patient to relax so the dentist can do what is required. When the two scenarios work together, it often reduces or eliminates the need to schedule multiple appointments and go through this struggle every appointment.

Improve Cooperation and Satisfaction

A person who has dental phobia and anxiety is never going to want to go to the dentist. It’s just a fact that they will always have some underlying worry about going. However, when sedation methods allow them to relax, they are generally far more cooperative because they are not overtaken by the anxiety or fear they feel.

Their cooperation will allow the dentist to work more effectively. In addition, the feeling of calm and accomplishment for the appointment will help the client feel satisfied about their care and their experience. They are more likely to continue to seek dental care in the future, knowing there is a solution that is designed to help them not be stressed and uncomfortable at every dental visit.

Risks and Things to Consider

Photo by bruce mars on Unsplash

Sedation dentistry is a form of medicine or a medical approach. As with any medical solutions, there are potential risks to be aware of. There are details to consider to ensure this approach is right for you. You can then weigh the benefits and the risks to make an informed decision.

These are the most common side effects:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Allergic reactions

Allergic reactions are typically rare, but they would be the highest-risk of these. Drowsiness and nausea are generally short-term and will resolve themselves.

It is critical to work with a qualified provider who will help you understand the potential risks and provide you with the best possible experience.

Get Some Recommendations from Others

Do you know one of the best ways to learn about your options? Ask around! You can find out a lot when you ask others about their recommendations and experiences. Personal experiences give you some insight into what other people know from real-life visits to a specific office. It may let you in on places you want to mark off the list or places you really want to check out.

Online Reviews Can Be Helpful

Outside of asking people you know and associate with, you can also learn a lot from online reviews. Google and Yelp are common review locations, but there are others out there as well. This gives you some feedback from the general public about their experiences. All offices could potentially have negative feedback from some people, but focus on the whole picture and whether there is more good than bad.

Professionalism, Experiences, and Specializations

It’s always a good idea to ensure the dental office you are considering is a professional office. How do you do that? Well, check into their certifications and credentials for starters. You can also look for specializations. For example, if you need cosmetic solutions, look for that capability. If you have dental anxiety and need sedation solutions, you can look for that, too.

Ultimately, determine if they have what you need and what you’re looking for. Are they qualified to handle YOUR care preferences and needs?

Confirm Insurance and Payment Options

If you have dental insurance, it’s always good to see whether the office is covered by your insurance. When you use somewhere out of network, this can lead to hefty out-of-pocket expenses. If you do not have insurance, check with the office about payment plans and any provisions they offer for private pay and cash payment.

Trust Your Instincts

As you consider your options or attend a consultation, trust your instincts and how you feel about the provider or the office. You should choose a location that is going to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. You want to know you are getting premium care and that you’re in reliable hands for whatever your dental needs may be.

How to Choose the Best Cosmetic Dentist in Tyler, TX

July 24th, 2024

cosmetic dentist Tyler TX

Cosmetic dentistry is often considered a luxury, but many times, it is the difference that brings new confidence to your smile. No matter what type of cosmetic dentistry you are seeking, finding the best cosmetic dentist in Tyler, TX, will be critical to your experience and results.

In this guide, we will walk you through some factors to consider to help you choose the best cosmetic dentist to meet your needs. Take a look!

Always Check Experience and Credentials

First things first, make sure you choose a dentist who is qualified to handle cosmetic needs. Just because they have a dental office or claim to be a dentist doesn’t automatically qualify them. Now, most dental offices are properly qualified, but it never hurts to double-check their credentials and make sure they are experienced in cosmetic dentistry.

You might also check for experience specific to the type of cosmetic dentistry you are looking for. This just reassures you that they know the procedures you are seeking. There is nothing wrong with asking to see a portfolio of work. In fact, they might even have a portfolio readily available on their website. If not, just ask and see.

Check Reviews and Testimonials

Get a feel for their business practices and office by checking out reviews and testimonials from prior patients. You can look at places like Yelp or Google to see candid reviews. These are not paid promotions, so you can typically trust they are honest reviews.

Be aware that every office may have some negative reviews, because you simply can’t please everyone. However, the goal is to see more positives than negatives and make sure that none of the negatives are a total dealbreaker for you. Look at the quality of work, office operations, and other details that will impact your experience.

You Should Always Start with a Consultation

Most dental offices will require you to schedule a consultation before just scheduling cosmetic procedures. This is your chance to see the office and get to know more about their standards and their service. You can ask questions to ensure you will be comfortable with the way they handle business.

While you’re at the consultation, get a feel for their communication skills and their processes. You should be able to get a price quote and get an understanding of their process with clear expectations.

Cost and Financing Decisions

If you are using insurance coverage to aid in the cost of your procedures, you will want to check for insurance compatibility. Regardless of insurance, you will also need to know the options and have a plan for out-of-pocket costs. Ask for a breakdown of the costs so you can be prepared. Find out if they have available financing or payment plans to accommodate your financial needs for the visit.

Location, Location, Location

Finally, consider the location of the office and whether it’s convenient for you. Depending on your cosmetic procedure, you may have to attend several appointments. Consider a location that works to help you make it to appointments and offers hours that make scheduling as easy as possible for you.

Tyler, TX Veneers: Who Should Get Them?

July 13th, 2024

Tyler TX veneers

Creating a stunning smile is not always as simple as just brushing your teeth. Many people face challenges with their teeth that lead to tooth loss or an inability to keep them looking their best. Proper tooth care is very important, but it’s also common to need additional solutions. If you’re looking for Tyler, TX, veneers, we’ve got the solutions for you.

Not everyone needs veneers, but there are many scenarios that might be a good fit. In this guide, we will take a closer look at what veneers are and discuss who should or could get them.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are a custom-made tooth shell that ultimately goes over the existing tooth surface. Typically, they are designed to cover the front of the tooth. They can be made from different materials, but porcelain or composite resin are the most common. They are designed to match the natural color of your other teeth and are tailored to your needs.

The idea behind using veneers is creating a natural look that is aesthetically pleasing.

Top Benefits of Veneers

There are some great benefits to getting veneers. That’s the best place to start our guide to who might be a good fit for this solution.

  • Improve the appearance of cosmetic teeth issues (cracks, gaps, chips, etc.)
  • Highly durable and resistant to staining
  • Minimally invasive approach
  • When done correctly, the final look is natural

Who Should Consider Veneers?

Now, let’s dive a little deeper into who might want veneers. There are several categories, and you might just fall into one of them.

Discolored Teeth

Individuals who have issues with staining or tooth discoloration can benefit from veneers. While they are often made to naturally match your teeth, they are brighter and can be whiter than stained teeth.

Chipped and Worn Teeth

Teeth that are chipped, cracked, or worn can often be improved by veneers. The veneer covers the wear of your natural teeth, restoring the shape and appearance to what they once were.

Gaps, Misshapen, and Uneven Teeth

People who have large gaps in their teeth or have irregularly shaped and uneven teeth may benefit from veneers. In some cases, braces or Invisalign may be an option, but if you want to avoid orthodontics, veneers can help to create a balanced look and fill these issues.

Long-Term Cosmetic Solution

Veneers are excellent when someone wants an approach that is long-lasting or near-permanent. Veneers can last for more than a decade if they are properly taken care of.

Quick Results

If you want to improve your smile or get a smile makeover done quickly, veneers might be a good fit. They allow individuals to achieve smile goals quickly with just a few visits to the dentist for consultation, molds, fit, and checkups.

Tyler, TX Invisalign: Costs and Timing

June 27th, 2024

Invisalign Tyler TX

Invisalign has quickly become a top contender in the cosmetic dentistry market. While it offers a similar approach to braces, some people prefer this solution because it provides quicker and more discreet results than your typical braces. Using Tyler, TX, Invisalign services can bring you the change in your smile that you’re looking for.

Before you decide if this is the best way to get a perfect smile, let’s take a closer look at the timeline and the costs involved.

Invisalign: An Overview

Invisalign is considered a modern solution. It is very similar to braces, although it’s slightly less invasive. It can work for a variety of straightening and adjustment needs, but you should note that it cannot always do everything that braces do.

Invisalign uses a clear liner that is molded to your teeth. It works in a series of liners that will gradually straighten your teeth to achieve the desired effect. Every liner is custom-made. Patients typically change liners weekly as they progress from start to finish.

Planning for the Invisalign Cost

The cost of using Invisalign can vary from patient to patient. Much of this cost is going to depend on how complex your treatment needs are, as well as geographic location and dental office costs. It is important that you work with a qualified dental office to get an accurate estimate of the cost it would take to treat your needs.

Generally speaking, Invisalign typically ranges from as low as $3,000 to as high as $9,000. Again, there are a lot of variables that determine the final cost.

Here are a few factors that should be considered for cost:

  • Treatment complexity
  • Geographic location
  • Experience of provider
  • Insurance coverage
  • Payment plan availability

Some insurance does not cover this type of care, while others may contribute a small amount. This might impact your out-of-pocket cost. Be sure to check with your provider to understand the costs and learn about any available payment plans.

Invisalign Timing Expectations

The process of using Invisalign is typically shorter than braces. Where most people wear braces for an average of two years, Invisalign treatments are typically completed within a year. Again, this timeline may vary depending on your needs. You might start noticing changes within a few weeks to a few months.

The Invisalign process progresses quickly, with weekly or bi-weekly tray changes. These are some things that might affect the length of treatment:

  • Misalignment severity
  • Compliance with wearing your trays
  • Your teeth’s response to the treatments
  • Routine check-ups and adjustments

It will be very important for you to follow the instructions from your provider and ensure you are wearing your Invisalign as much as possible. It is recommended that you wear them for a minimum of 20 hours per day, which means mostly removing them to eat or clean them.

Exploring East Texas Sedation Dentistry: What Is It?

June 20th, 2024

east Texas sedation dentistry

A trip to the dentist is often easier than it sounds. For many people, this triggers fear and anxiety that is hard to overcome. That is why knowing the options for East Texas sedation dentistry is so important. You don’t have to go to appointments stricken with fear and unable to relax. There are plausible solutions to help a patient relax and remain calm throughout their visit.

With our services in East Texas, we provide a wide variety of sedation dentistry. Below, learn more about what it is and how it can help you.

What is Sedation Dentistry, Exactly?

Let’s start at the beginning. Sedation dentistry ultimately refers to the use of some form of medication to sedate or calm a patient. Whether the patient experiences anxiety struggles or they have a history of dental anxiety, these solutions are meant to help calm them and help them to relax so they can maintain their oral hygiene.

Sedation solutions can be used for anything from a simple cleaning or checkup to more detailed procedures. The type of sedation used should be considered carefully and then chosen to meet the patient’s needs as well as the procedure taking place.

Sedation levels range from mild options like nitrous oxide to deep sedation through IV or even general anesthesia.

Here is a quick overview of the common types of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide - also called laughing gas, this is breathed in through a mask over your nose. It provides a sense of euphoria and happiness, helping keep you relaxed and at ease.
  • Oral Sedation - uses a pill that is prescribed and taken prior to the appointment. The pill helps to calm anxiety before you even arrive at the dental office and hopefully lasts throughout the appointment.
  • IV Sedation - typically reserved for more complex procedures or for strong sedation needs. IV sedation generally results in relaxation and potentially even falling asleep.

The Benefits of East Texas Sedation Dentistry

The benefits of using these techniques apply to both anxious patients and the providers who see them.

The overall goal of sedation is to help reduce anxiety during a dental visit. When anxiety is reduced, the patient is calm and relaxed. They can feel at ease during an event that might otherwise be scary to them.

Sedation can help manage pain or the fear of pain. It can also reduce general discomfort. When the patient is calm and at ease, it allows the provider to better manage the things they need to complete while the patient is in their care.

Who Can Use Sedation Dentistry?

Technically speaking, any adult can use various forms of sedation for their dental care. Laughing gas is often even available at routine cleanings for those who need it. There are many individuals who can benefit from using sedation solutions:

  • High anxiety
  • Past dental trauma
  • Low pain thresholds
  • Special-needs patients
  • Extensive dental work

How to Choose an East Texas Dentist

June 13th, 2024

east Texas dentist

Finding the right East Texas dentist can be a challenging process. You should be able to choose someone who makes you feel comfortable and who will be able to meet your unique needs. There are several options to choose from, so take the time to learn more about your choices and make the decision that works best for you.

Below, we share some great tips for choosing the perfect fit.

Know Your Needs

What do you need or want in a dentist? Are you looking for specific characteristics or services? This will be one of the most important elements of your decision process. You need to find the right choice for you.

First, think about the services you want the office to provide. Do you need sedation services, or are you looking for any type of cosmetic dentistry? If your goals are just basic oral health cleaning and maintenance, that’s fine, too. Either way, you want an office that meets that need.

Get Some Recommendations

Getting recommendations from others is a great way to find out about real-life experiences. It is important to remember, though, that just because one person does or does not like an office doesn’t mean you will have the same experience.

However, you can still get a feel for what to expect and the office that is most likely to be a good fit for you. Ask around a little bit, do some research online, and check out reviews or testimonials. Use multiple sources to get a clear view.

Office Location and Hours

If you have set hours that you want to schedule within, you’re going to need to look for an office that operates during those hours. Most offices typically have business hours, but some do offer evening and weekend scheduling. It just depends.

What about the location? Is it going to be convenient for you to make it to appointments? Make sure the office is easy to access from your home or workplace and that you will be able to get there without a hassle.

Consider Costs and Insurance Coverage

For your budgeting purposes, it’s going to be important to understand the costs of services. If you use dental insurance, then you should check to make sure the office you are considering is covered under that plan.

Insurance varies widely, which means you might settle on an office that doesn’t take your insurance. This is something you should check early on so you can eliminate them from the list if it’s not going to fit financially.

Communication and Comfort

Finally, your comfort is probably the absolute most important aspect of this journey. You need to feel comfortable and at ease. If you suffer from dental anxiety, then consider working with an office that provides gentle solutions and will offer sedation if you need it.

You should feel comfortable, and the dentist and their office should also communicate with you well.

Choose Smith Dental Care as Your Tyler, TX, Dentist

Finding the best East Texas dentist really depends on your needs. Choose a dentist who works for your needs and preferences. At Smith Dental Care, we are proud to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for all of our patients. Pill Sedation in Tyler, TX: A Stress-Free Dental Experience

May 30th, 2024

pill sedation

If the thought of going to the dentist in Tyler makes you anxious or afraid, you need solutions to help you cope with your appointment. Choosing pill sedation in Tyler, TX, just might be the solution that you need. And if taking a pill doesn’t appeal to you, then you can consult with your provider to see if they offer alternative sedation options that better meet your needs.

Thanks to sedation techniques like oral medication, you can visit the dentist with ease and enjoy a stress-free experience every time.

Understanding Pill Sedation

There are different methods of sedation dentistry available, and oral sedation is a common choice. With oral sedation, an individual takes a prescription medication before they go to the dentist’s office. This prescription comes in a pill form and will have specific instructions for dosage that pertains to your needs.

Before you go to the dentist, follow the instructions for how to take this medication. When you get to the dentist, you can go inside feeling calm and relaxed. The effects of the medication should last throughout your appointment, but they may leave you slightly groggy. It’s required to have someone drive you to and from this appointment.

There are different types of oral medication that can be used. The most common option is benzodiazepine, which often comes as Valium or Halcion. However, there may be an option that is a better choice for your needs, and your dentist will be able to make that determination.

Pill sedation is convenient and it’s non-invasive, which is why it is a popular choice for going to the dentist.

The Benefits of Pill Sedation

There are benefits to this approach. The primary benefit is simply that it helps to alleviate any worries or anxiety you experience when going to the dentist. Instead of allowing those anxieties to rule your actions, you take the prescribed pill as instructed and it helps to induce a state of relaxation.

Most patients who use this method report feeling more comfortable and at ease during their appointments. The added benefit is that your dentist can perform what they need to do much more easily as well.

Finally, it’s also convenient, which is a substantial advantage. It doesn’t have to be closely monitored during use, and you don’t have to wear an IV or a mask for administration.

Is Pill Sedation Right for You?

While there are many advantages of pill sedation, it isn’t necessarily the right approach for everyone. If you do experience dental fear and anxiety, speak to your provider to determine whether it could be the right option for you. If you have concerns, share those with your dentist and talk through the details.

Your dental provider will need to know your medical history, current medications, overall health, and any allergies to make an informed recommendation.

Quality Pill Sedation in Tyler, TX

If you’re wondering whether pill sedation may be the right option for you, we are here to help! Consult with us today, and let’s talk about your needs and what we can do to find the best solution. We’re here for you and dedicated to providing a quality experience. Contact us today to get scheduled.

Discover Relax Dentistry in Tyler, TX

May 17th, 2024

relax dentistry

Dental care often leads to worry and anxiety. There is just something about professionals working inside your mouth and the sound of their equipment that tends to make people nervous. The good news is that there are some really great solutions out there to provide relax dentistry in Tyler, TX, to ensure your dental care needs are met while helping you remain relaxed during your appointment.

Relax dentistry is designed to prioritize the comfort of the patient by helping them relax. Read more about it below!

What to Expect from the Relax Dentistry Experience

There are different methods that a dentist’s office may use to promote relaxation in their chairs. The method utilized will vary from patient to patient. It will depend on the needs of the patient, as well as the procedures being performed. It’s a personalized approach, so the scenario may look different for everyone.

The idea of relax dentistry is to provide a soothing and calming environment for all patients. The office should be designed in such a way that you feel at ease for your entire visit. From calm voices to soothing lights and music, all of this comes together to make a difference. The idea is to eliminate the stark, clinical atmosphere and instead make things cozy and relaxing.

In addition to a soothing atmosphere, there may also be sedation solutions that are available for a medicinal approach to calming and relaxation.

Redefining Patient Care with Relax Dentistry

You expect any type of medical facility to be clean and sterile. This is incredibly important for safety reasons. But there is a certain level of sterility and cleanliness that can take it too far for comfort. A dentist’s office that practices relax dentistry is still going to make sure their space follows hygiene and sterilization standards. They just take another approach to design, decor, and creating a certain ambiance.

When you walk in, you feel far less stress or anxiety because instead of a hospital-like facility, you are greeted with warm smiles and a cozy atmosphere. The staff will listen to your concerns and then will take the appropriate steps with innovative techniques and technology to help you relax during your visit. You may just need added reassurance, but if you need sedation solutions, they can typically provide that for you as well.

Communication and Understanding the Options

Use a dentist’s office that will communicate with you every step of the way. They should have several different options in order to provide a solution that meets your needs. Communication is key, and the dentist and their staff should remain calm and collected with a focus on helping you relax.

Most relax dentistry facilities will offer sedation solutions when they are needed. This may be part of the relaxation experience for you. These are the most common sedation solutions:

  • Laughing gas or nitrous oxide
  • Oral sedation
  • IV sedation

The most common of these is nitrous oxide, as it is easy to control and doesn’t typically cause lingering effects. However, the right solution will be between you and your dentist.

Relax Dentistry in Tyler, TX

Finding relax dentistry in Tyler, TX should be simple. Look for an office that provides a welcoming environment as well as sedation solutions for the anxious patient. An office that takes your relaxation seriously and will work to alleviate discomfort provides a much better overall experience.

Safe Sedation Dentistry Explained

May 7th, 2024

sedation dentistry

Going to the dentist isn’t always a pleasant experience for everyone. For some, it’s full of nerves and anxiety. Whether it comes from the sounds you hear in the dentist’s office, having a bad experience at one point, or just general anxiety, you should know that there are options out there for safe sedation dentistry

When the sounds, smells, and anxiety make going to the dentist a challenge, count on a dentist’s office that can offer you advanced solutions to make it through. A qualified office will have multiple options available. They will also be able to help you find the right fit and be patient while you do so.

Understanding Sedation Dentistry

There are different forms of sedation that can be used in the dental world. Most of the options provide different results or varying levels of sedation. The tools use medicine to help a patient relax and remain calm throughout their appointments and procedures. These methods can be used for anything from general cleaning to complex procedures. With sedation solutions, you can get the care you need without the stress and anxiety.

Varying Levels of Sedation

There are multiple options for sedation because not everyone needs the same thing. Your needs may vary based on the anxiety you feel, but they also may vary depending on the procedure you are having done. Safe sedation considers all the details to help you choose the most appropriate options for your needs.

The safety aspects revolve around monitoring, proper use, and ensuring you get what you need. Sedation can be applied at minimal, moderate, or deep levels.

Sedation Administration

There are three main types of administration:

  1. Nitrous Oxide - also called laughing gas, this substance is breathed in through a mask. The gas works to make you feel euphoric and relaxed. The effects wear off almost immediately after use.
  2. Oral Sedation - a prescribed medication that a patient takes prior to their appointment. The sedation is often moderate with this pill, and you should plan for someone to drive you to and from your appointment to be safe.
  3. Intravenous Sedation - administered through an IV by a board certified anesthesiologist, this option offers deep sedation. In some cases, you may even use general anesthesia. The patient is monitored closely throughout the procedure.

Safe Sedation Dentistry to Meet Your Needs

Sedation solutions are there to provide you with benefits so that you can make it through a dental appointment or procedure. There are benefits to you as well as to the dentist serving you.

Check out these benefits:

Thanks to sedation dentistry in Tyler, TX, patients have the ability to seek the care they need while also feeling calm and comfortable throughout their visit to the dentist. Explore more about this below!

Sedation Dentistry in Tyler, TX

There are many different options when it comes to using sedation for dentistry. You may find that something simple like a bit of nitrous oxide is all that you need. However, the solutions can be determined based on your procedure and your needs.

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help a patient relax during a dental appointment or procedure. These solutions are tailored to individual patient needs, making them a versatile solution that can cover a variety of issues. Most sedation allows patients to remain awake during their procedure, but general anesthesia may be used in more complex situations.

Different Types of Sedation Available

You will find that different providers offer different solutions. One provider may choose to only offer nitrous oxide in their offices, while others will ensure there is a broad selection of options to meet their patients’ needs.

Here at Smith Dental Care, we offer these types of sedation:

  • Laughing gas/Nitrous Oxide: administered through a nasal mask that is worn throughout your procedure. The medicine will relax a patient and give them a sense of euphoria, hence the nickname “laughing gas.” This wears off very quickly after the mask is removed.
  • Oral Sedation: a sedative pill taken within a specific time frame before your appointment. Generally used when you need to reduce anxiety to even show up at the dentist office and remain calm through the appointment. Sedation varies from patient to patient, but can be long-lasting or make a patient sleepy.
  • IV Sedation: administered through an IV by an anesthesiologist, this is a deep sedation that will make the patient fall asleep during their procedure. Patient is closely monitored. The effects may take quite a while to wear off following use.

When it comes to sedation, there are solutions for minimal, moderate, or deep sedation. The choice used may depend on the patient's needs.

Understanding the Benefits

There are many possible benefits of sedation dentistry. The benefits help both the provider and the patient during the process. Let’s check out these benefits:

  • Patient is more likely to cooperate
  • Patient is more comfortable throughout their appointment
  • Patient will experience less anxiety during a dental visit
  • Some patients don’t even remember the appointment after sedation
  • Dentists can do their work more effectively and quickly

Gentle Hands, Bright Smiles: The Compassionate Care of a Gentle Dentist

April 9th, 2024

gentle dentist

Healthcare and dental care can often make it daunting to keep your appointments. Whether you’re a nervous patient or you have sensitive teeth and gums, working with a gentle dentist is critical to ensure you have a positive experience. Great experiences and proper dental care lead to bright smiles and confidence.

Compassionate care from a gentle and caring office can really revolutionize your entire experience and outlook on dental care.

A Serene Welcome

From the moment you walk through the door, things should be welcoming and calm. Imagine the difference between walking into chaos, crying, yelling, and people running around. Now compare that image with one of walking into a calm space with background noises of work, gentle music in the air, soothing colors, and a comfortable environment.

The staff greets you with a smile and gets you checked in. Walking into calm can help soothe your nervous jitters and will make a huge difference in a positive experience, too.

A Human Touch

When we say a human touch, we don’t mean the dentist or hygienist is going to grab you up in big bear hugs the whole time you’re at the office.

A human touch is more about having staff members who prioritize your comfort and create an overall comfortable environment. They speak kindly to you, they’re empathetic, and they give you warm smiles throughout your entire procedure.

Tailored Care

Every dental patient is different. Even when you come in for only a routine cleaning, you are still unique. A gentle dentist office is going to recognize this and provide the tailored care that you deserve. They don’t rush, they don’t judge - they just work with your needs at that moment.

They listen to your questions and concerns and address each one accordingly. It’s a customized approach to your needs, whether it’s simple and routine or something far more complex.

Comfort Every Step of the Way

We spoke of comfort and welcoming atmospheres when you enter the office, but what about throughout the office? From the waiting room to the procedure chair and everywhere in between, the office should be set up to make you as comfortable and at ease as possible.

If you’re a nervous wreck at the dentist, it’s helpful if the providers offer some sedation solutions, too.

Your entire journey for dental care should always be comfortable and relaxed.

Judgment-Free Zone

The dentist’s office is there to help you take care of your teeth. Some situations are more challenging than others. Whether you have poor oral health habits or you simply are prone to dental issues, the office should be a judgment-free zone.

It is their job to educate you and ensure you know proper care. However, they can do so without passing judgment. No matter your oral situation, you should feel supported, educated, and cared for rather than judged and demeaned.

Explore Gentle Dentistry Solutions with Smith Dental Care

At Smith Dental Care, we care strongly about every patient who walks through the door. Our goal is to help you achieve a healthy smile no matter what your needs may be. We’re here for you! Schedule your appointment with us today!

Local Gems: Locating the Best Dental Services Near Me

March 29th, 2024

best dentist near me

Searching for the right “dental services near me” is an important task. It’s not a matter that should be taken lightly, as it’s much like choosing any other form of healthcare provider. Your dental health will affect your smile as well as your overall health. You want an office that helps you feel relaxed and at ease, no matter why you are there.

Not sure where to start finding a provider? Check out these simple tips and tricks to help you uncover your local gems.

Get Recommendations from Others

One way to find excellent care is to ask others who they recommend. Talk to your family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers to see who they use and what their experiences have been like with their providers.

You can learn a lot about the environment, the customer services, and whether or not the office could be a good fit for you.

Check Out Online Reviews

It’s also a good idea to check review sites and see what people have to say. This helps you learn about what others have experienced so you can narrow down your choices. Let’s be clear here: even the best of offices may have a few negative reviews. You simply can’t please everyone.

However, what you should look for is what people have to say overall and whether they have more good than bad to share. Google is a good place to look for reviews, but there are some other websites out there too, like Yelp and Healthgrades, where you can find  more information.

Pay attention to the details and why reviewers do or do not recommend this office.

Ensure They Are Properly Qualified

This most likely won’t be an issue, but it’s always a good idea to check out the office’s credentials and qualifications. Make sure the providers are properly licensed and accredited through a relevant professional organization. Check out the website to look for these details, or contact the office and ask about it.

Convenient Scheduling

You want to find an office that is near you and won’t be impractical to head to for an appointment during the day. You also should consider whether you can schedule in a timeframe that you can make work.

Most dental offices work traditional 9-5 hours, but you may find some that schedule late appointments, too. Their location is also critical, so you aren’t driving 3 hours for a dental cleaning. It’s all about accommodating your needs here.

Services Offered

Take a look at the services offered and make sure they will meet your needs. Most dentist offices provide a wide range of services, but they do vary. If you want sedation dentistry, look for an office that can provide that. If you’re looking for orthodontics, be sure to notate that. Most offices provide traditional dental services and more, so just be sure to check out the choices.

Insurance Coverage and Affordability

If you have insurance coverage, you will need to choose a dentist’s office that is covered by your insurance. This will certainly be critical. And if you don’t have insurance, you will need to understand costs, payment options, and overall affordability for your appointments.

Expertise Matters: Navigating Your Dental Health with an Experienced Dentist

March 5th, 2024

experienced dentist

Our smiles are one of our greatest assets. With a smile we can light up a room or bring joy to others. Part of having a great smile is taking care of your dental health. Not only can a healthy smile boost your confidence, but it can have a direct impact on your overall health and wellness as well. Maintaining quality dental health comes from working with an experienced dentist to handle your dental needs and routine cleaning and care.

It is so important to choose an expert in the field who knows what they are doing and will provide you with quality service. You also want an office that is going to help you feel comfortable and relaxed no matter your reason for visiting.

Dental Expertise is Important

Not just anyone can be a dentist. It takes years of schooling and testing to accomplish the title. However, not every dentist will be great or set themselves apart. This comes from expertise and from caring about their patients. With the complexity of dentistry, it’s important to find assurance that your dental office can provide a comprehensive suite of solutions that cover anomalies, emergencies, treatments, and basic dental care as well.

You will find that most seasoned dentists have worked hard to build their expertise and their reputation. This expertise is crucial to ensure you get the care you need for your oral health. The best providers will have advanced technology, in-depth knowledge, and the ability to help you feel comfortable in the chair.

Personalized Treatment for Your Needs

While dentistry is a broad subject, no two people are exactly the same. We all have similar details when it comes to the type of teeth and their alignment or even how those teeth should look or feel.

When it comes to maintaining dental health or making adjustments for dental needs, these are all personalized. Whether you have teeth that need to be straightened, wisdom teeth that need to be removed, or you just need a basic cleaning, your dental experience should be personalized to meet those needs. Every appointment should include a thorough exam and then creating a plan for any further treatment needed depending on your needs.

With personalized treatment, you can achieve optimal results.

Comprehensive Services

There are dentists out there who only handle basic dental needs. However, there are also many who go above and beyond to meet as many customer needs as possible. The best dentist offices are going to be able to provide a comprehensive suite of services so that their patients can have the majority of their needs met in one place.

There may be specialty services that need to be referred out elsewhere, but when you can get cleanings, fillings, orthodontics, and other services all in one place, it helps significantly. Consider it a one-stop-shop for the majority of dental needs, with expertise offered in each category.

Advanced Technology and Techniques

Experienced dentists should provide you with access to advanced technology and practices for your oral health. If machines and protocols are outdated, you may not be getting the best possible care. Technology is always changing, and so are treatments for certain needs.

An office that invests in training, updating techniques, and utilizing state-of-the-art equipment is better prepared to give its patients the best treatment and the best care possible for their needs.

Building Trust and Confidence

Going to the dentist is scary for some people. A dentist isn’t just there to treat you. They also have the task of helping you feel confident in their chair. This comes from building trust and relationships with their clients. When you feel as though a dentist cares, you are far more relaxed in their office.

Quality Dental Care with Experienced Dentists in Tyler

Quality dental care should be easy to find, but sometimes it requires you to do your homework to find the best providers out there. Expertise and quality service will always stand out in the dental industry and will be characteristics you want to look for when you choose a dentist for your oral health needs.

Let Smith Dental Care be the dental provider you can depend on. Our providers are experienced and truly care about our clients. We’re here to help you create a beautiful smile and feel comfortable while you do! Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

The Ultimate Guide to Sedation Dentistry for Cosmetic Procedures

February 27th, 2024

sedation dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry has enabled the transformation of countless smiles through the years. When you can repair something you don’t like about your smile, you not only get a burst of confidence but it improves your overall well-being, too. Whether you seek something like teeth whitening or veneers or many choices in between, cosmetic options can lead to anxiety and fear.

But what if there are solutions with sedation cosmetic dentistry that allow you to control and manage dental anxiety while also handling your dental or cosmetic needs? It’s a great solution that offers many anxious patients the support they need to get through a procedure.

What Exactly is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is described as a dental procedure that works to improve your smile. It is dentistry that goes above and beyond basic needs like dental cleanings and handling cavities. Instead, these are procedures that perfect your smile.

For some people, the process may be as simple as undergoing teeth whitening. Others may need veneers, orthodontics, or other solutions to achieve their smile goals. There are various procedures and treatments that can be used to get there.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can be used alongside any type of dental treatment or procedure. It’s the use of medication to help a patient relax and remain calm throughout their appointments and procedures. There are three main types of sedation:

  • IV sedation
  • Oral sedation
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Each of these are used for different needs and have their own pros and cons. You can work with your dentist to determine the best approach for your needs.

The Benefits of Sedation Cosmetic Dentistry

There are many benefits of combining sedation options with cosmetic needs. Many cosmetic procedures require more detailed approaches and could easily make a patient more nervous about their experience. If you are apprehensive about cosmetic treatments, sedation simply allows you to be comfortable and relaxed while the dentist does what they need to do.

These are some of the most substantial benefits:

  • Reduce patient anxiety
  • Increase patient comfort
  • Improve safety of dentist and patient
  • Improve time efficiency for the procedure

Sedation helps both you and the dentist. When you are anxious, it’s hard for you to let the dentist do what they need to do. When you use sedation to help relax you, they can get the work done more easily.

Things to Consider Before Using Sedation

There are a few things you should consider before you choose sedation for your cosmetic procedures. Ultimately, you and the dentist’s office will need to sit down and go over the details to determine whether it is right for you. Consider your medical history and whether or not sedation or medications may impact your health. The dentist’s office will need to be made aware of any underlying health conditions you may have in order to keep you safe.

In addition, sedation often requires additional costs. While the tradeoff of being calm and relaxed is typically worth it, you may need to plan or prepare for those costs ahead of time. Take the time to understand the sedation method that will be used so you can be prepared for any side effects you might experience following your procedure.

Sedation Cosmetic Dentists You Can Depend On

The idea of cosmetic procedures and sedation dentistry can be a lot to take in. However, you might be surprised to find that they are a great tool that works well when used correctly. Count on a dentist office with extensive experience using sedation to work through a variety of cosmetic dental needs.

Overcoming Dental Phobia with Ease: Exploring Sedation Dentistry at Smith Dental Care

February 20th, 2024

overcoming dental phobia

Dental anxiety is a pretty common issue. According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 36% of people experience dental phobia, making them anxious about receiving needed treatment. About 12% of those people are said to have an extreme fear. This dental phobia makes it challenging for the patient to come to the dentist. While most dentists will do their best to make the patient feel at ease, it’s still hard to do so and ensure they get the care they need.

Thankfully, there are tools available for overcoming dental phobia and getting dental care. The most common solution is sedation dentistry, which we proudly offer here at Smith Dental Care.

As with any phobia, dental phobia is an uncontrollable and persistent fear of going to the dentist. It may seem irrational to others, but to the person experiencing the anxiety, it is very real. Those with dental phobia may experience anything from mild anxiety to crippling fear that prevents them from seeking care.

What is Dental Phobia?

They may fear different aspects of the dental visit, including just sitting in the chair. Some worry about pain, needles and drills, not being in control, or just not knowing what to expect. It may come from a traumatic experience, or it may not be based on any prior encounter.

How Dental Phobia Affects Dental Care

Those who do experience dental phobia often put off their dental care because of the anxiety. Some will not go to the dentist until they have an emergent situation, and others may struggle with every visit. The inability to maintain proper oral health can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and other dental issues.

Leaving dental needs untreated can contribute to a host of other health issues as well, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dental care is critical.

Overcoming Dental Phobia with Sedation Dentistry

One of the best ways to make a customer feel more at ease while they visit the dentist is with sedation dentistry. With the options available, a patient can prepare for the visit and remain calm throughout any cleaning or procedure that is needed. It also helps to use a dentist’s office that makes you feel comfortable to the best of their ability. When you combine sedation solutions with optimal care and treatment, you get wonderful results.

The most commonly used forms of sedation are as follows:

  • Nitrous oxide: also known as laughing gas, this is the most common sedation choice. It’s breathed in through a mask on your nose and will make you feel relaxed and euphoric. The sedation wears off almost immediately when the mask is removed.
  • Oral sedation: take an oral medication prior to coming to the office so that you feel relaxed and calm before you even come in. This may help calm you enough to get to the office. Some medications may cause drowsiness and grogginess.
  • IV sedation: the other option is IV sedation, which enters your bloodstream directly through an IV. It’s a heavy sedation that may even make you fall asleep. It is controlled throughout the entire process, and it works quickly. You may feel some lasting effects after an IV as well.

Sedation dentistry allows the patient to get the care they need and provides the dentist with the solutions to help you get taken care of.

Making East Texas Smile: Free Dental Day at Smith Dental Care February 17th!

February 14th, 2024

Free Dental Day is a national phenomenon in which many dental offices are participating. It’s a small way to give back to the community and provide people who may not otherwise get dental care with free dental services.

Mark your calendars for Free Dental Day at Smith Dental Care on February 17th! We are committed to helping East Texas smile, and we hope those in need can check out these services and get the dental care they deserve!

What Is Free Dental Day?

Throughout the United States, thousands of dentist offices are joining a movement to provide free dental care for a day. Different offices can choose their date for free care, or they can join a national movement to focus on a specific day.

On this day, people who need access to dental services can visit the office and get free, high-quality dental services. The goal is simply to make dental care more accessible for everyone and ensure more people can enjoy healthy, happy smiles.

Each year, millions of dollars worth of services are donated on free service days across the country. Thousands of patients get the care that they desperately need or simply cannot afford. It is our hope that we can give back to the community of East Texas in some small way with our upcoming Free Dental Day on February 17th.

Why Free Dental Day Is So Important

With the rise in costs for insurance and services, many people don’t maintain dental insurance on a regular basis. More than 75 million adults in the United States have no dental insurance coverage. This means that 75+ million people don’t get routine dental care, cleaning, and other important services.

It doesn’t mean those people don’t need dental care; it simply means they likely cannot afford it. Due to the gap in coverage, they neglect dental cleanings and visits to avoid the out-of-pocket costs. This can lead to many potential issues:

  • Cavities
  • Tooth decay
  • Tooth loss
  • Misalignment
  • Periodontal disease
  • Gum disease

When dental care is neglected for too long, it could potentially lead to more extensive and more expensive work needing to be done. And yet, many people will put that off as well because they don’t have the coverage to help with the expenses.

Without proper dental care, people often struggle with confidence or shame. They want their smile to be healthy, but they simply don’t have the resources to make it happen. That’s where we come in!

The Value of Quality Dental Care

Realistically, you should see a dentist at least once a year for routine cleanings. The industry recommendation is to get a cleaning every six months. These cleanings are not just to improve your pearly whites; it’s also to check your teeth and your mouth and be proactive with any potential issues.

If you have cavities, misalignment, or other concerns, the dentist can address those concerns with you and help provide services to correct them. Being proactive with dental care manages your dental health but also could impact your overall health as well.

Did you know that proper dental care can help to reduce the risks of heart disease related to periodontal disease, diabetes, oral cancer, and kidney disease in some cases? Of course, dental care will not always prevent these things, but it can make a difference.

A free day to get dental care also contributes to helping improve and protect your overall health.

Transform Your Smile with Sedation Dentistry: The Art of Full Mouth Restoration at Smith Dental Care

February 5th, 2024

full mouth restoration

Planning for extensive dental work can be scary. When it comes to full mouth restoration, you know that you are undergoing major work. It requires a little bit of bravery, but the good news is that there are also tools to help you make it through it without as much fear and anxiety.

Dental office technology has improved through the years, and with sedation dentistry, you can be comfortable throughout your entire procedure. Trust the dental staff to take great care of you while keeping you comfortable throughout the process. Whether you have multiple dental issues that need to be handled or you scheduled full mouth restoration to create a stunning smile, you’ll be taken care of.

Full Mouth Restoration

The idea of full mouth restoration is taking a mouth that needs total rehabilitation for whatever reason and perfecting the smile. These are major procedures that require comprehensive dental care to accomplish the desired results. From damaged and missing teeth to handling the aesthetics of your smile, there are many details involved in the process.

Not every restoration process is the same. We all have different stories to tell, and your oral health challenges are unique to you. The dental office can use sedation and full mouth restoration planning to address multiple needs at one time.

We create a comprehensive solution designed to help you achieve positive oral health, a healthy smile, and a plan that meets your needs. With a holistic approach, we can help you attain the results you desire.

Full Mouth Restoration Is a Personalized Solution

At Smith Dental Care, we tailor big projects like this to your needs and your wants. It’s a very personal process, and many times there are emotions running rampant on top of the desire for an improved smile. We work closely with you to ensure we can help you meet your treatment goals.

Every full mouth restoration starts with a consultation and evaluation. This allows us to get to know you. It also gives you a chance to get comfortable with us before the work begins. We will complete a thorough examination, take impressions, X-rays, and digital imaging, and start planning. This exam allows us to assess the current conditions of your teeth and oral health so we can make a plan for the rehabilitation process.

Once we assess and understand, we can start planning treatment that is based on your needs and your desired outcome.

Full mouth restoration isn’t always just a single step. Depending on the need, it may require multiple steps or procedures. Most restoration projects include a combination of cosmetic, restorative, and periodontal procedures to complete.

A Look at Various Restoration Approaches

There are different concepts used for varying needs. Let’s take a closer look at a few of them.

  • Dental Implants - these can replace missing or pulled teeth, providing a permanent replacement that allows your teeth to function as normal and look great in the process.
  • Porcelain Veneers - veneers help to correct imperfections in aesthetic appearance, such as discoloration, chips, cracks, and other issues.
  • Dental Crowns and Bridges - Provide a repair method for damaged teeth without a complete replacement or overhaul. These restore strength as well as function for the involved teeth.
  • Gum Disease - Treatment is personalized to consider things like gum inflammation, infection, and recession. Protocols will vary depending on your situation.
  • Orthodontics - Treatment with the use of braces or invisible alignment devices to help correct misalignment and bite settings.
  • TMJ Treatment - Helps to alleviate pain or dysfunction associated with TMJ

The Role of Sedation Dentistry in Full Mouth Restoration

When you undergo full mouth restoration, sedation dentistry provides a resource to keep you calm during the process. Most procedures can be completed while you are sedated.

There are different types of sedation available. These are the kinds we use:

  • Intravenous (IV) - sedates through an IV with an anesthesiologist. This provides the deepest possible relaxation by putting you to sleep during the procedure.
  • Oral Sedation - sedation through a pill that will help to relax you but does not completely sedate you. Don’t be surprised if you fall asleep just because you are so relaxed.
  • Nitrous Oxide - this is one of the most commonly used sedation methods in dental offices. It’s also known as laughing gas. This is administered through a nasal mask that calms you and makes you happy during your appointment.
