Sedation Dentistry

Gum surgery
Anxiety and fear of the dentist leave many individuals without proper dental care for many years. Without continued checkups, cleaning, and maintenance, patients may find themselves suffering from a wide variety of dental concerns before they finally make an appointment to address these concerns. Cavities, sensitivity, trauma and extreme pain eventually lead these fearful patients to our offices. But you’ll have fewer dental problems by being proactive instead of reactive about your dental care. This is where sedation dentistry comes to the rescue.

When you are calm and relaxed, we are able to perform multiple procedures such as dental implants and root canals that may cause some patients anxiety. Some of our patients require gum surgery as treatment for gum disease (gingivectomy to remove diseased gum tissue) or for cosmetic improvement (to reshape gums). Sedation makes these procedures go more quickly and smoothly.

Sedation is offered in one of three forms: intravenous (IV), oral, or nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). IV sedation renders the deepest level of relaxation, allowing the patient to sleep during the procedure. IV sedation is performed at our office by board certified anesthesiologists for your safety. For oral sedation you simply take a pill to feel peaceful and relaxed. These forms of sedation require the patient to have transportation to and from the appointment. The third type, nitrous oxide, is the most common. It relaxes a patient to the point where he or she is not worried about the procedure. But it wears off immediately, so you are able to drive yourself home from the appointment and carry on with your day without further complications.

From cleanings to gum surgery, sedation dentistry allows Dr. Smith, Dr. Douglas, and Dr. Ogletree to administer the best dental care possible to their patients without causing them to fear the dentist's chair. If anxiety has kept you from seeing the dentist, call Smith Dental Care today to start taking proactive care of your dental health.
